I also thought that Guinan (sp) was a cool character on that show, Whoopi's best role.

Re: Official Star Trek discussion thread

First got hooked on Star Trek about 10-12+ years ago when there was a marathon of the orig series. This was quickly followed up with an addiction to TNG!!! (best Star Trek series ever!) Q, Guinan, Data, Troy, #1, Worf!!!
I triiiied to get into DS9 but really couldn't. Then they brought Worf over. Not a bad move!
I watched a bunch of Voyager but wasn't really hooked. And I had HIGH hopes for Enterprise... but the prior comments were correct, Bacula should've kept on Quantum Leaping!!

ps I never ended up seeing the 'last' Star Trek movie... so the Data thing was spoiled. (but that's my own fault for not seeing it yet... still )

Anyone else looking forward to the new Star Trek movie? It's a geekquel. I mean a prequel. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it although I'm disappointed William Shatner won't have some part in it or contribution to it. He obviously can't play a young Capt Kirk anymore, but still... would be nice if he were involved somehow.

I'd be a bit more excited if they weren't going back to the orginal crew again. I'd rather see something either from "Enterprise" (Capt. Archer & crew) or TNG. I love the orginal gang, and the original show, but I think they've done enough with the movies, time to move on (no pun intended).

I like the idea of the original crew. I think it will be a lot harder to pull off than doing a Next Generation movie or something. I hope they do pull it off, though. I like the Next Generation series the best as far as watching on TV, but I love the original crew and most of all, William Shatner. I just love him.

I don't know. Star Trek's had *seven* TV series and people have been following them for over four decades. This will be the 11th Star Trek movie, I believe. I think it could keep going for a while.

In the future perhaps. I think they are just hit with genre overload at this point. Two series' running at once for over a decade did not help at all. They also had a problem balancing keeping die hard fans happy while appealing to the general public so I think they lost both for the foreseeable future. I think we will get movies every once in a while but until someone gets some inspiration we won't have a new series.

ToS flopped but was great in reruns.
TNG worked because people liked the genre and the characters.
DSN worked because it was radically different from the previous two - quite a bit darker.
VOY and ENT as much as I liked them saturated the market and began going downhill because of the attempts to get the general public to watch, mainly based on sex appeal; Kes, 7, Paris and Torres, Topal and Trip.

Personally, I wish they had done a few more Enterprise seasons, I liked that a lot and would welcome a movie.

I think in another couple of years the fans might be ready for a new Star Trek. Maybe a Next Gen, next gen sort of thing. Or something in between Enterprise and the orginal.

I hope so. Some new twist, but well within the familiar Star Trek world.

Exactly! It's funny cause I was thinking about Star Trek this past week and wondering if we'd ever see another series on TV again.

Yeah - I wanted something to tie up lose ends too. That is why I was so annoyed they cut Enterprise after 4, from what I read they were going to use the last few seasons to depict the Romulan war which would have been really cool. Something between Archer and Kirk would be fun but I think we will have a long wait.

Like I said, a couple of years I think. After all the Battlestar Galactica and Stargate stuff has died down. We'll be primed and ready for some good 'ol Star Trek!

    Time to go home now!

They cut it before I saw any of the episodes. Was it the Earth-Romulan war?

No, they just showed a few random clashes between earth and romulus in season 4. Sort of a tease but I think they were setting the stage and still unsure of the future of the show. They had an in to show the war and the early years of the 'federation' but it was stopped.

edit: maybe I misread that so yes, I was talking about a human/romulan war they were going to show.

That series was great though, I loved the interaction between the different races when humans were the new kids on the block. Characters were solid too. All in all it was right up there with TNG for me despite its relatively short run.

Are the episodes available for viewing or download anywhere online?

I would love to see a film or even an entire series just based on the whole history of the Earth-Romulan war(s).

Franchise went downhill after DS9 ended and Voyager's 5th season was over. Since 2000.

The last movie sucked cock. Way too many comparisons to Star Trek II for my taste.

I've seen all of the original series and DS9, all but 1 episode of Voyager, all but 10 or so episodes of TNG and I've missed a couple episodes of Enterprise. Plus, I've seen all the movies. All in all, I've seen over 650 episodes.

I haven't seen any of the animated series though. But I have read a couple dozen of the books out there. Also, I used to own some figurines and be quite obsessed with the franchise. Never dressed up went to conventions though.

You can get season one on iTunes and it is still aired once a week on the Sci-Fi channel. Your best bet is to just rent or buy the DVD's.

I agree with you, which is why I was disappointed that the cut Enterprise after season 4. The next seasons were supposed to focus on the war. I would love to see a movie depicting some of it. Though they rarely show much of the fighting in wars, outside the end of DS 9 they tend to ignore big fights like the Borg invasion. It is usually just the Enterprise shooting it out here and there with the enemies.

It's ok. You're among friends here.

I didn't get too attached to Voyager, but I've seen every episode of TNG multiple times. Yes, I'm secure enough to admit this openly.

So who is your favorite TNG character?

Mine is Data. (He's fully functional in *that* capacity, you know...)

I love to hate Riker and Warf. Wussy punks. They try to make them out to be so badass, and yet Warf is the first to sick bay when some little weapon or meteor shakes the ship a little bit. I also love that he's supposedly of a very viscious and brutal race and yet is always uptight and on the verge of being offended about some little thing. And Riker... well... he'd hesitate to fight a Ferengi baby. ("Are you sure, Captain? I *think* I can take him...") I get all MST 3000 when those two are on the screen.

Something between Archer and Kirk would be fun but I think we will have a long wait.
I had heard that the Earth/Romulan war was one of the original possible plot lines for the new movie.

So true, it's funny. I enjoy it but don't necessarily advertise that. Here on the net I figure their are far dorkier things people get entertained by.

It always makes me laugh when I find out someone likes Star Trek that I didn't know. A buddy of mine who I had known for years was here one day and saw a TNG ashtray I had somewhere and asked if I liked star trek. I said yeah and then he told me he did too, made me laugh! Now we have a running joke when we're out, if someone is blabbing away one of us will say 'computer, delete character' for a laugh that no one else gets.

Also recall when I was talking to a girl a while back I asked what she was doing and she said 'Watching Star... (trail away).' I had to push her a bit to admit she was about to say star trek, made me laugh. I think she felt better when she found out I liked it too. I have done the same though only to find out the person I was talking to liked it too. Strange.

Still, like I said, it's one of those shows you tend to discuss with the same people.
