I was just watching some of Under the Table and Drumming, and I got to the part where Carter talks about his double-bass work. I had always wondered how he was able to do the hi-hats with the double-bass....

Watch right at 50 minutes. During a song, how he does that with his feet while simultaneously giving the snare drum a rim job and dominating every other part of the kit, is beyond the capacity of my brain.

It's not that out there to me, but maybe that's just me. When I first obtained a double pedal, I saw that both were next to each other and wondered what I could do if I played both.

I mean, is that concept really that out there?

I agree. It's just the timing of your hands to not hit the hats while they're in the up position. That can be tricky but once you get it figured out its very simple.

Will be backstage with Henry at the Arkansas show. My Carter kit is having a feature on it for Kit of the month in the May edition of Modern Drummer Magazine. Hoping Henry can get the hook up and have CB sign it for me or even meet him. Would be a dream come true!

Was watching some 02 videos last night and man, Carter used to tear that crash of doom and trashformer up. Those were 2 cymbals I thought he hardly ever used, but after the camera was on him for majority of the show, it's incredible how much he actually used to use everything.

I really am starting to miss that style of his playing lately. May have to talk to Henry about getting that stuff added back lol

You mean the musical fusion-y approach? Carter was at his best and most musical in the Butch era.

Butch Carter over Timmy Carter. Everytime.

Yeah I mean I'm noticing it more and more now. The way he played was just awesome. His sequence of crashes then to a out of nowhere China smack was awesome. Now splashes are chinas. I don't want to think I'm over the new style of his playing, but it's definitely possible. As much as he used the extra gear I wonder why he took it out. I guess the electric guitar made it much less noticeable so no point in having it.

it's also Butch's style of play and how it allowed Carter to fill in the rests with beautiful, technically unique fills. the way Tim solos, there's far fewer rests or moments for Carter to "speak up"

Agreed - I miss that style of playing so much.

Also, I've noticed more and more in similar discussions that come up on this site, that it seems most of the musicians (people in this sub forum) prefer Carter/Butch over Carter/Tim. Maybe I'm reading into things that aren't there, but I find it to be an interesting phenomena nonetheless.

Couldn't agree more!!! Seems like CB and DMB all together had a little more "feel" when Butch was on the keys...

Just curious how rare these are and what the current rate for one is. Haven't seen any on ebay in the past few years.

Been very quiet in this thread lately. Was backstage in West Palm Beach this year as well as Arkansas and it was incredible. Got to sit on Carter's kit and discussed a lot with Henry. Justin Scott aka BeaufordBuddy accompanied me to the shows and it was a blast. I'm sure Henry was overwhelmed having probably the 2 most knowledgeable Carter fans with him.

Still didn't get to meet Carter and I've just about given up hope or trying. Talking with Henry and getting the opportunity Justin and I get is more than enough and I'm forever grateful.

Regarding Carter's main kit, he now has 8 splashes. The 15" Crash and 14" China have been replaced with a 10" Zildjian Oriental China trash, and a new splash stack of a 6" Zildjian A Splash, and 8" Zildjian K custom splash.

I'm not sure why there is the need for 8 splashes, but whatever. I miss the 14 and 15 honestly. Henry is responsible for most of the changes. Carter rarely even knows what he's playing. Henry knows what he wants better than anyone, and has to be the best tech ever.

Yeah Carter could be surrounded with splashes and he'd still reach over them to play the hell out of his chinas. He ignores a lot of stuff on his kit. A shame really.

I never use the cross sticking method at all. I still know how because that's how I taught myself first, but when I open it up it just frees up my right arm to add little touches while keeping a nice rhythm with the ride or hats.

    Re: Carter Beauford

I was given his email address by someone who wanted to get me in touch after seeing my drum kit featured by his kit in the Yamaha Hexrack ad in modern drummer.

I emailed him and have been in touch ever since. It really surprised me that he took up with me so much. I guess having the Carter replica kit helped. Justin (Beaufordbuddy) has had the treatment for a while also even before me.

He's a truly down to earth and classy guy. Always get a gift of sorts back there. Sitting on the kit is good enough for me though . I helped him acquire a few drum items this past summer and we chatted on the phone for a while about them.

Hope to be meeting Carter finally backstage in Little Rock. He has a strict schedule he follows show days and hardly ever does meet ups, but it's supposed to be in the works.

Feel very lucky to call him a friend after watching Carter and Henry build the kit after so many years!

Got Vip seating for the show. Guess we will sneak over to speak to Henry as we are going in super early. LOL jk... I do have a pic that I was interested in seeing about. Its Carter B. on Pearls with inverted boom stands for the cymbals w/ autograph. Super old would love to find out more about it!!

I think nowadays Carter is a myth backstage lol. Dude literally doesn't come off his bus it seems until it's time to go on

Hell, can you blame him.. He will be 60 in a few. I would be tired of conversations w/ strangers too. I think its time that he & DMB enjoy that money they have earned. 25 years straight! Congrats to DMB!

Yep my thoughts too. Would love to just finally say hi and a quick thank you. I don't think anyone else has as close to a replica kit as me. I'm guessing that's why Henry took up with me lol. I'm no different than any other fan otherwise
