holy shit, you're right. And yet they've still got a -28 run differential, WTF.

my mom is like the epitome of a fair weather fan... that's what it's called, right? like almost the entirety of the last 2 years, you couldn't pay her to watch a game. Now alllllllll of a sudden she's catching practically every inning (though I freely admit I ain't much better)

just heard a couple hours ago about the Ryan Howard thing of getting a beer bottle thrown at him from the stands... great, yet another chance for every other goddamn city's fans to pretend they're perfect and Philly is scumbag central. well actually, and on a quasi-related note, I think I recall hearing a couple weeks ago on the radio that we got the top vote in some national survey of the people of Philly (not just sports fans) were the "angriest" in the whole country?

Anyway, I'm thinking throwing a bottle at another person with the intention of harm is something more than just getting your seat revoked at a stadium. That if they somehow discover who exactly it was, they can be charged with something, and I hope they are. I saw the quote from Howard about if it was him who went up into the stands to confront someone, he'd get in 19 different kinds of serious trouble.

I understand being disappointed in Howard the last few years, I really do. It's tough seeing a guy get paid $25 million to hit below the Mendoza line.

But to hate him is ridiculous. And to throw stuff at him? Fuck that person. It's a game and you're a piece of shit for taking it to that level.

I wish he was playing better but I can separate the contract from it- the contract is Amaro's fault. Everyone in this thread would hit less than .150, and every single one of us would gladly take that contract. Not his fault

here's what pisses me off about the Howard hate. People say he's not clutch, that he benefitted from the other guys, etc

Do you guys remember, in 2008 the Phils may not have made the playoffs. They were down in the standings and Utley and Rollins were missing a lot of time in Aug and September...that september Howard hit .352 with 11 HRs and 32 rbi...those are insane #'s, and arguably the reason we even made the playoffs

that's a good write up, but here's the problem..

Howard is the only remaining face of everything that was wrong with the previous regime- it got to a point where this town wanted to see Hamels, Utley and Rollins all gone- and for good reason, as much as it sucked to admit it. While this is the first year that we can finally move on, Howard's still here. I think most of the vitriol is gone, compared to last year and especially the year before, but there's obviously some still there. I think a lot of fans, whether right or wrong, need to see Howard off the roster to fully move on with the rebuild.

that said, everything Zolecki said is technically correct. What Zolecki didn't capture was what Ryan Howard represents to the fan base...he's a daily reminder of this team's terrible fall from grace

and this is coming from a huge Howard fan and supporter

Howard just can't keep up with major league pitching anymore.

It really is an anomaly. I don't suspect an prior PED usage at all, just that he hit that age wall. It happens to a ton of players. Look at Carl Crawford getting DFA'd. Shit just happens. Howard was never the same after his two serious injuries, no matter how hard he worked to recover and get into better shape. It's a shame.

I don't know man. I'm honestly not sure if he works that hard on his swing itself. It literally looks like he forgot how to swing sometimes. Just some of the worst swings I've ever seen.

He's always just been piss poor in pitch selection though. You don't get many smart ABs with him, even before he really started to struggle.

Howard just can't keep up with major league pitching anymore.
In Ryan's prime he had the bat speed and discipline to take fastballs deep to Left Field. and he would hit the occasional change up or curveball deep as well because he wasn't getting blown away by the fastball.

Since the Achilles he has lost the ability to jump all over Major League fastballs..so now he is sitting "Dead Red" on fastballs. Pitchers are smart enough not to give him heaters over the plate so hes chasing fastballs out of the zone and looking ridiculous on anything that is offspeed.

Really a sad decline to watch. Ill always love Ryan Howard as part of our Offensive Trinity (JROLL, Chase, Ryan) that led to a championship. One of the all time great Phillies...but its time to let him go

but do you really think that sort of either/or is actually necessary, though? I mean, of course the one thing we know straight up is he's done by the end of the season anyway since it's the final part of the contract. And it's not like they can get out of having to pay him every last cent, well there's no way in hell there'd be even 5% of trade value with him with someone and even if by miracle there was, not like that team would pay any portion of whatever's left on the $25M.

and for the record, whoever was talking about this a little bit, honestly even during his "prime" time early in our whole playoffs run, he was still taking more than plenty of horrendously ugly swings on offspeed stuff from lefties. God, watching him on a slider low and away, even when every single damn person in that stadium (& watching at home) KNOWS that it's coming...

Jr...while he took a lot of horrendously ugly swings, in that 5 year stretch his season avg was approx .275/45/125, and he helped lead us to 2 WS and a ring (the only philly championship in about 30 years now). So with all due respect, don't.

As for your other point, no they don't have to do it. But if they want to cut ties, thats the graceful way to do it. Right now McKennon is stuck aswering questions about him every single day and having to play him. There's no reason Joseph should be missing 4 straight games, none. But that's the position McK is in. Howard needs to be gone now, and the Phillies should nudge him that way.
