The Sox had a great September and a shit October. Thinking winning in September (peaking too early) is why they lost in October is beyond dumb.

i read an article just before the playoffs started that was trying to show which team had the best chance of winning the world series based on how they faired with the conventional wisdom of what matters in the playoffs. it showed that the hottest team entering the playoffs and the coldest team had pretty much the exact same chances of winning once the playoffs rolled around. it also didn't matter who had the best pitching or the best offense or the best or worst record among the teams who made the playoffs. not a single factor that people generally point towards being the reason the team will win matters once the games actually start.

The Sox lost because they weren't as good as Cleveland for three games in October. They had a good regular season. Pretty simple.

interesting read. there is some logic to the hottest teams playing best, but not by much

    Quote:
Overall, the hot teams did fare a little better, so this idea isn't completely without some merit: The hot teams went 49-42 in postseason games and the cold teams went 27-31.

great - expect even more empty seats! it irks me the way the organization is handling the "empty seats" issue. i can only shake my head when i watch a game on TV and see thousands of empty slots out there in the crowd. IMO, their focus should be getting butts in the seats, but obviously that's not the case

its business. they only place they want butts is through the turnstiles at the gates. where they go once inside, who cares, as long as its somewhere they can spend more money. can't do that from your seat when you're actually paying attention to the game, but you sure as hell can spend money at a bar with a mostly unobstructed view of the field that you'll catch glances of in between conversations.

i know the rockies hate me as a fan. sure i went to like 10 games this year, but i bought upper deck seats or got promo seats that were like 75% off their normal price. i parked a 1/2 mile away in a city lot for $3, bought a $1 water from a street vendor, and sat in my seat all game. i bought stadium food once all season. i did buy a nolan shirtsey, but i probably didn't even give them $250 the entire season.

yeah i know its business, but i am not a fan because it looks like no one goes to the games. the old stadium had the ability to get LOUD because everyone was in the seats. it was an intimidating place to play as an opponent. i DO like the new stadium, i just wish the organization would adjust their model to get people into the seats.

Was to be expected, glad we got them to eat up a good portion of the salary and we got their 7th best prospect in return.

I really really hope they don't commit to the guy who runs around the bases like a weirdo after hitting a home run. Would much rather have Beltran back, strictly from a contractual standpoint.

    Happy birthday Mo!

    Quote:
-Remember how uncomfortable Aroldis Chapman looked pitching more than 1 inning in the postseason for the Cubs this year? Even Jansen had some hiccups when asked to do it for the Dodgers. Rivera compiled 58 postseason appearances of more than one inning in his career, with an ERA of 0.53 in those games.
-In 98 postseason games, batters hit .174/.212/.227 against Rivera. The worst qualified hitter in MLB this year (Adeiny Hechavarria) hit .236/.283/.311.
-More people have walked on the moon (12) than men who have scored against Mariano Rivera in the postseason (11).
-Mo's career 205 ERA+ in the regular season is the best mark in MLB history.
-Rivera's saves (652) and games finished (952) are both the all-time marks in MLB history.
-In modern MLB history (1920-present), Rivera's 1.000 WHIP is the lowest among all pitchers (min 1000 IP).
-Rivera had 17 seasons with an ERA under 3.00, the most in MLB history. He had 15 seasons with an ERA under 2.50, the most in MLB history. He had 11 seasons with an ERA under 2.00, the most in MLB history (tied with Walter Johnson).
    -Consistency thy name is Mo. Rivera had 40+ saves at ages 27, 29, 31, 33, 34, 35, 39, 41, and 43. He had an ERA under 2.00 at ages 27, 28, 29, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, and 41.
-Rivera pitched in 539 career road games, faced 2,484 batters, and allowed 5 walkoff HR.
-Yankees had a .950 winning percentage in games in which they handed the lead to Rivera.
-Batters hit .129/.139/.188 on 0-2 pitches career v. Rivera.
-Rivera had a career 0.70 ERA and 0.759 WHIP in 141 IP in the postseason.

It is funny, in the mid 1980's to the early 1990's that place was often pretty empty because the Yanks were bad. The team knew the TV optics looked bad when there was so many empty seats behind the plate for the game so they'd would actually let people come down from the cheap seats and sit there just to make it look like the place was full during the pitches. I know I benefited from that more than once. Now they don't want we unwashed masses mixing with the premium season ticket holders down there by the plate so those seats remain empty. Shame, every fan should have a chance to view a game from good seats at some point in their lives.
