I don't think I've ever gotten an email from them. Been using it for a little over a year now. Maybe you have email subscriptions on?

    Re: Budget

I used to use mint.com for everything, but...they are really lacking now on support for varying banks and institutions.

    - My student loans from FAFSA got transferred to some GSMR people in the Northeast, no support for that.
    - No support for my Roth IRA brokerage firm. Sallie Mae breaks all the time.
    - And my Ally auto loan LOCKS ME OUT every single time I access mint for "security reasons". When you log in, instead of even answering security questions, they forcibly make you forward an email with an "unlock code". I've done this umpteen times and that in itself makes me want to quit Mint. Thankfully, I should finally pay off my 5 year car loan next week. In 2 years.

My CC debt is next. It's all interest free right now, so I figured I'd pay off my car loan since there's no penalty for holding a balance. Go budgeting!

    What I do regularly:

I have a folder in my bookmarks that has direct links to each and every one of my banks/accounts (probably 10 or so total). Every two or three weeks, I visit each one (or visit mint which covers about 6 of them), and then plot the balances all out on an excel spreadsheet. I use it as sort of a month by month tracking of all my accounts and where they are at, as well as how that translates to total assets, liabilities, and net worth. As well as some further breakdowns into retirement accounts versus liquid accounts (because there's a difference if you are up $1000 over last month, if it all came from a 401k paper increase, well...you can't touch that for 35 to 40 years anyway). It's good seeing the total debt number go down.

While I'm doing this, I will click through all my transactions from checking, credit cards, etc and make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. It's a helpful process to keep myself on track.

fiscal cliff is a 2013 issue...and it will be resolved.
do you have a specific tax you are concerned about?
my best guess is they won't effect you.

    i use excel chad.
i break down expenses by fixed and discretionary.
i usually download bank and cc info each month and sort by total expenditure.

you can get a good sense of where you are spending...what your coverage is..and what you can throttle back.

Track your spending, once you get it to where it's manageable, apply for an airline miles credit card. Use it for everything and pay off the balance every month (you arent over-spending because you are using it like a debit card..maintain your normal spending habits.). Once you make your first purchase you will often get miles bonuses (20000 to 50000). A plane ticket is 20000.

So, you can budget your money AND get your travel on.

    Re: Budget

I use an Excel spreadsheet myself. I budget the following areas:

Mortgage- These are controllable, same amounts every month
Utilities (in my town, internet, water, trash pickup, electricity - it's all one company and handled on one bill) - These are noncontrollables, and things I try to watch closely so as not to waste money such as shower lengths, amounts of laundry I do, turning the lights off when we leave the house, etc.
Gas- These are controllable, same amounts every month for me
Phone- These are controllable, same amounts every month
Insurance - These are controllable, same amounts every month
Groceries (I set a $300 a month allowance for groceries and don't go over that) - I usually do 2 trips a month because I like fresh stuff, as well.
Entertainment (this includes movies, dining out, etc - I set a limit on that and I don't go over it, if I reach that limit, my ass stays at the house the rest of the month)
Future Concert/Tour Saving (I set aside 50$ a month to save for the next tour and hotels in preparation for the tour that is to come next)

Then I have categories for my daughter, not sure if you have children but she has Private School and Activities that she does, so that all gets budgeted too.

Basically, the best way to do it is look at your online banking for a whole month and look at everything you spent money on and make categories for it. Look at all your misc expenditures and ask yourself, "Did I really need this?" or "Is this something I should spend money on?" and add up all your totals and take out things you don't think you should have spent money on and set those as your goals and limits.

I use an Excel spreadsheet, as well. It helps.

I know it may seem cheap or whatnot to live by a budget, but I've found I've been able to set money aside and I'm more prosperous living by a budget than without.

Excel is a good tool and I'm going to eventually supplement the dsbudget with it, but for the time being, the dsbudget is working fine. It's a nice little program that works very well.

Didn't think the investment or finance threads were right for this question, so I'm bumping this oldie.

I started a new job at the beginning of June and I get paid monthly (on the last business day of the month). Right now I use Mint for budgeting and love it. The main advice I'm looking for here is how should I adjust my budget for this new pay schedule? So, for instance, I just got paid yesterday. I should count that as income towards my July budget though, correct? Or, I guess what's the best way to do it? And how should I account for purchases made after being paid then? For example, I got paid yesterday and bought a few drinks last night. Should those go on July or June?

Just kind of tricky getting used to this once a month thing.

That's the way I would do it. Once you establish that way it will begin to look normal when budgeting for the month ahead.

The one nice thing is with a monthly check, you'll be getting more each calendar month than you would bi-weekly (save those two months a year where you get 3 paychecks). Frankly, I'd rather have the worth of those two additional paychecks given to me equally over 12 months so I have the same budget to work with every month instead of having a twice a year windfall.

I usually count income and expenses based on when they put the money in my hands (or in my bank account). So hours worked in June that don't get paid until July counts as July income. Should be easier for you with a monthly pay cycle.

Just be consistent month to month and it should all come out in the wash.

This looks good, might need to attempt this

I use two apps to manage my finances.

Mint Bills is used to pay all my bills. It was just bought by mint, so we'll see how it does.

Then I just found a new app called Level. You mark which bank charges are monthly bills. Then it will start telling you how much you have to spend based on your previous month's bills. I just signed up for it last week, so it may suck.

Personally, I've never balanced a check book (I'm 34), but I'm also good with money. I don't make a lot of spontaneous purchases. When I was 16 and had my first job, I had several thousand dollars saved up....until I got a gf...there went that money.

My wife, though, damn she sucks with money. Sometimes it's a good thing, just because I'm really cheap, she helps balance us out. But she's not a saver. Drives me crazy.

Got my first credit card (directly correlated to my name and accounts) and went a little crazy with it in late May/June. Had to learn the lesson the hard way. At least it's a manageable debt and not outrageous.

I'd just start with July and go from there, your next for August, etc. Either way, assuming your paycheck is going to be the same every month, you know your monthly income and can base the monthly budget on that number.

I should add there usually comes a time during the course of the year when there are timing issues between when you get paid and when certain fixed expenses are due. I use a credit card to cover the gap, but pay the balance in full every month (earning cash back in doing so). I put as much on the cash back credit card as I possibly can to earn as much cash back possible. As long as monthly fixed + variable expenses don't exceed that monthly income $ amount, all is good. The key is tracking every single variable expense. It's easy to get caught up with other things and the little expenses add up quick.
