Independence Day 2 (July 3rd, 2015) officially announced

http://www.nme.com/filmandtv/news/in...in-2015/309810

Quote:
The long-awaited sequel to Independence Day has been given an official release date.

The original, released in 1996, followed a last-ditch effort to thwart an alien invasion taking place on the 4th of July - the day of America's annual Independence Day holiday. Now Fox has announced that Independence Day 2 will open in cinemas on July 3, 2015: the Friday of that year's holiday weekend.
So it's finally official, should make pretty big bank regardless of cast.

I will be a lot more pumped about this one if they lose the comic relief and do it more like War of the World (Spielberg). The first trailer, when it was still ID4, was so ominous and looked ******** awesome and while the movie itself back in 1996 was still pretty amazing on first view, the constant comic relief did nothing but detract from the seriousness of the movie IMO.

When you're in the desert all alone with a real life alien you don't suddenly crack jokes and act like the man, this is a WHAT THE FUCK moment. That said it was still a fun ride, but I hope they realize the full potential of the topic with the next movie.

Jesus, just shoot me now. If there was any example of soul-crushingly bad "summer blockbuster" bullshit (outside of the work of Michael Bay, of course), it would be anything that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich have attached their names to. They both cite Star Wars as an inspiration, but neither of them knows how to make that kind of special effects extravaganza without it feeling completely soulless and driven by what a marketing consultant tells them wants to be seen, and wholly lacking anything resembling quality. I barely tolerated the first one; this, I just want to bury my head in the sand come next July

I can't picture it. What will the aliens do to get us? I mean, we already figured out how to bring the bastards down (and spread it around the world). What can they do that can outflank people spreading the message via Morse Code?

The Earth has been infected with alien life this whole time and the aliens from the first movie were actually trying to benefit the human race, but could not communicate that they were only wiping out areas of large infestations. They also did not value life the way humans do and were ok that there were some collateral damage. In the 2nd movie we find out that Bill Pulman is really the leader of this hidden alien race on Earth and it is up to Will Smith to kick ass, with a little help from a surly, not super old, Tommy Lee Jones. Bam ID and MIB are the same universe.

Or something just as shitty will happen, I don't know just pulling it out the old pooper

Even though the reason for the aliens coming was kind of absurd, I can't deny, the original was maybe the most fun I've ever had at the theater.

The movie was not meant to be landmark cinema. It was not meant to be serious and creepy like Alien. It was meant to be fun with lots of action and cheerleading. Which it passed with flying colors.

And it's why it's one of the most re-watchable movies I've ever seen.

    Oh...Allah...no.

I was just talking about this shit in the irritations thread.

Stop with the obligatory sequels to everything. Some movies are just better on their own. What's this gonna be, some far fetched plot where they rise out of the earth/ocean or there are a few survivors from the mother ships who mount a rebel-guerilla style invasion and have learned to disguise themselves as humans? Staring Jeff Goldblum as the neurotic mad scientists who mixes taco powder, lemon juice, Dr Pepper 10, and sperm to produce an antidote to the aliens and his father played by Judd Hirsch (who I have actually met because he lived not far from me in the Catskills) who cracks self-deprecating jewish jokes while summoning God, who only cares about Jews, to save the world? And complete with an aged Bill Pullman or Paxton or whoever the fuck he is (too lazy to imdb) who gives advice to the current leader of the world on how to save it? And let's not forget the eccentric bit actor who plays an important role. Instead of flying a jet into the middle of a mothership he'll probably just crash his pickup truck into their leader.

Seriously, STOP. Movies have either gotten progressively advanced or fucking horrible. Stop with sequels. If there's another "Oceans" movie I'm going to scream.

although I couldn't help thinking while watching Man Of Steel, wow this might be the one movie over the last 15ish years that actually features more destruction of civilization that any one single Roland Emmerich movie has

(and I realize now I meant to say him instead of Dean Devlin in my above post)

They work together almost constantly, so it's really a package deal. I won't fault you for including Dean in your original analysis.

I guess there could be a way this movie could work. A 2nd invasion from a more sophisticated species of alien. After world has been re-built a new species of Alien race invades earth. Only this time the movie ends with the Aliens destroying the human race and calling earth their own. Then when Independence Day 3 comes out it'll be about a small group of human survivors fighting back against the aliens to reclaim earth for the human race.
