Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 16th, 2016)

What I'm hearing now is that they didn't have the final draft of the script when they started shooting it, and then during shooting they made some rewrites that made the movie a lot stronger, so now they're going back and incorporating those changes.

Might be some damage control disinformation, of course, but it sounds reasonable to me.

    so it's either:

studio heads saw it, thought it was too gritty, needed to be more fun

    OR

they did some rewrites and the movie is going to be worlds better now

    which one sounds more reasonable?

They wanted more jokes is what sounds reasonable to me. They didn't take any risks with the Force Awakens, and while they should on these spin offs they are probably concerned and want to play it safe again.

taking any risks with TFA would have been stupid. Nothing to gain and everything to lose. If they took risks (like Lucas did with the Pre Trilogy) and the risks didn't land, Star Wars could have been over.

TFA was meant to re-establish the series, and it did that. Mission Accomplished

basically everything that was different than the OT...100% cgi, amping it up on the droid feelings, etc...

Lucas intentionally moved away from everything that worked in the OT. That was a risk. It didn't work out well

TFA was pretty much the same movie as A New Hope.

That was Abrams doing not a Disney mandate:

    Quote:
“[‘The Force Awakens’] was a bridge and a kind of reminder; the audience needed to be reminded what ‘Star Wars’ is, but it needed to be established with something familiar, with a sense of where we are going to new lands, which is very much what 8 and 9 do. The weird thing about that movie is that it had been so long since the last one. Obviously the prequels had existed in between and we wanted to, sort of, reclaim the story. So we very consciously — and I know it is derided for this — we very consciously tried to borrow familiar beats so the rest of the movie could hang on something that we knew was ‘Star Wars.'”
The next two are suppose to be a lot different.

Point was they didn't take risks with TFA so on these stand alones they should. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that they will with these either.

It actually does sound like they are inserting some lighthearted banter/jokes.

Yeah, the way they did TFA basically makes sense for what it was: Disney "reclaiming" Star Wars from the prequels.

No mention of anything being "too dark" for Disney execs, though.

kinda like the idea of differentiating the episodes from the filler...

the filler movies ARE the opening crawl of the episodes.

Part of me says it has to, but the other part says why would it?

What am I saying, of course, it has to! It's Star Wars! The opening crawl is one of the most recognizable features of the films, if not the most recognizable.

Crawl should be reserved for the episodic films, IMO.
