Lot's of good music comes through this city.

The Rochester International Jazz Festival also does wonders to bring exciting acts to the city both new and old.

Europe '72 and closing of winterland were the 2 albums that got me hooked.

Really i would just start with anything that looks appealing to you. There are a ton of Dicks Picks available, live shows series like Live Trax. There are live DVD's available, most Best Buys carry this stuff.

As for studio i recommend Terrapin Station, workingmans dead, and of course there self titled release 'Grateful Dead'...

Terrapin Station, the song, is a top 5 song all time for me...with the 1st ever performance of it being the best, imo...i forget the exact date but i am pretty sure it was 1976.

^^ i gave a link to archive in the thread earlier, there is a ton of streamable sbd's on there, plus some a ton of d/l but most are aud recordings.

I also recommend, even tho its not the Grateful Dead per say, to get the soundboard recordings from Phil & Friends from the Warfield in 1999. you can d/l them for free from www.nugs.net and go to free stash.

I would start with Europe '72. That was what hooked me. If you don't have it, get it. Now. It really showcases the band over several nights overseas during what I think was their prime.
Then, I would say move on to The Closing of Winterland, and Ladies and Gentlemen...(Fillmore East 1970). Some REALLY great jams on there.

I wouldn't really "waste time" with their studio albums. I have them all and barely listen to them.
Not that it's a "waste", it's just the genius that is the Dead really is much more apparent on their live performances...not so much in studio recordings.

Also, the Archive has SBD recordings of just about every show...definitely worth checking out. Like I said earlier, my favorite era was 70-73, but listen to it all, then see what you dig the most.

If you're into dvd's, View from the Vault I & II are fantastic, as is The Closing of Winterland (CD/DVD), and Downhill From Here (Alpine Valley) is a good later Dead show.

God, I love them so much. I could talk about their music all day.

Anyone ever check out the Acid Test Reels??
    Magical stuff.

I've got one on VHS from I think '86 - Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Pretty good, however I wish it was simply the concert instead of all the graphics that they attempt to go into about 1/3 of the way through the tape.

at those horrible, spacey, trippy images they put up...at the time, it was probably "cutting edge" to do shit like that.

    YES!! that part is amazing.

I also recommend for those who want some more inside info on the dead, to read Phil's book. Searching for the Sound: My life with the Grateful Dead.

I loved every page of that book.

my parents were ol' school deadheads and didn;t tour much after 1988...they were turned off by the scene that escalated around that peroid.

They said it just wasn't the same and wanted to remember it how it was back in the 60's and 70's
