Stephen King: A Constant Reader's Thread

Let's talk about the man, his work, and how much it has affected our respective lives.

The first book I read by King was actually read to me in grade school by my teacher. It was The Eyes of the Dragon. That was in 1991, I believe. The next book I read (on my own) was Pet Semetary, and it remains my favourite King novel. Possibly my favourite novel ever. It is definitely his scariest. The horror really creeps in the story, which starts out quite idyllically.

Well, over the years I have consumed pretty much everything else by King. Some of my favourite books of his include: Pet Semetary, The Eyes of the Dragon, The Dead Zone, Different Seasons, Everything's Eventual, Hearts in Atlantis, Insomnia and Dolores Claiborne. With regards to the film adaptations of his various works: The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Secret Window and Stand by Me are probably my favourites. Misery is not bad either, until the end, that is.

For reference, this is a list of all the King/Bachman I have read. The only 2 books missing are: Faithful (his collaboration of the Red Sox's 2004 winning season) and Danse Macabre (his horror genre treatise), both of which I have either not read or finished.

WITH PETER STRAUB

1984 The Talisman
2001 Black House

(Plus various short stories, including Premium Harmony, The Reploids, Morality, The Blue Air Compressor, I Was a Teenage Graverobber, Jhonathan & The Witches, The Killer, The King Family and the Wicked Witch, Man with a Belly, The Night of the Tiger, Throttle (w/ Joe Hill), The Crate, Skybar, Slade, Weeds, The Hotel at the End of the Road, I’ve Got to Get Away, The Other Side of the Fog, The Stranger, The Glass Floor, The Cursed Expedition, Never Look Behind You, Before the Play.)

Lastly, in all the interviews I've seen King in, he comes across like an Average Joe. This demeanour seems to show up in his work, too. His characters are mostly people I can relate to, at least in motivation. And finally, in speaking of his work, he is a master at plot pacing and character development. I do find he seems to have difficulty ending longer works though which is why I usually prefer his shorter works; they seem to narrow his focus and leave less to the whims of chance.

A reviewer once called Stephen Edwin King, "The Shakespeare of the 20th Century", and while I believe that sentiment to be over-dramatic at best, there is no denying that he has a lot of more say in his stories than most give him credit for. Aside from his tales covering multiple-genres, his main message, at least to me, seems to be that the monsters, especially those in human form, are only as scary as we believe them to be. They may win the battle but they will ultimately lose the war. As for his purpose for writing, from the dedication page of It (a note to his children): Fiction is the truth inside the lie, and the truth is the magic exists. (Might be a slight paraphrase.)

Apparently he's working on a mid-novel about The Dark Tower set between books 4 & 5. Check out Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis and Black House for more DT related story. Hopefully you already have though.

I'm a huge King fan, although my book count is not nearly as high as yours.

Could you please tell me which ones you'd recommend out of the following? (These are ones I've been thinking about reading)

    1. Blaze
    2. Under the Dome
    3. Just After Sunset
    4. Desperation

I think, looking at your list, my completed count is 19. My 3 favorite are The Stand, Pet Sematary, and Needful Things

Lisey's Story and From a Buick 8 I never finished, lost interest.

Just After Sunset is a collection of short stories. It's great, especially the story Mute. And if you've ever had a neighbour you hated, you'll love A Very Tight Place.

Under the Dome is, of course, his newest novel. It's his third longest behind The Stand and It, but certainly doesn't feel like it at all. Action-packed from start to finish. I read it in 4 days, a record for me (and any King book) I think.

Probably go with Desperation, judging by the consensus. Under the Dome seemed pretty interesting, maybe I'll pick that up when it gets to paperback (not sure when that'll be)

Re: Stephen King: A Constant Reader's Thread

First King book I read was Salem's Lot in the mid-80's and it along with Pet Semetary I think are King's scariest books.

There's not much of his I haven't read. I left The Dark Tower in 1993 about half way through The Wastelands. I can't remember why I stopped, but I think I was having trouble with the idea that it didn't end anywhere.

I started my quest for the tower again about 2 years ago right back from the start with The Gunslinger. I just started the final book about three weeks ago and it has been an amazing ride so far. I took time in between certain books to read Insomnia and Black House. I love The Talisman so much and it was great to continue along with Jack Sawyer's travels...but it also made sense to read those books in between The Dark Tower.

I have no idea how The Dark Tower will end, but I guess I'll find out in about 950 pages.

I love King, he's easily my favourite author. I have been a Constant Reader since about 1985.

One book I've never read is It...I think I may check that out after The Dark Tower, then I'd like to read Under The Dome.

I found Tommyknockers to be the hardest read of Kings in terms of the length of narrative, but I'd still highly recommend it along with everything else I've read.

I thought Desperation was miles better than The Regulators.

You must read It. Some of his best character development EVER. And I also agree that Desperation is better than The Regulators.

For me it was probably Gerald's Game. It only gets going near the end and really just should have been a short story.

My least favourite King books are: Gerald's Game, Rose Madder, Lisey's Story, Bag of Bones and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

Oh, and I forgot to mention how much I love Dreamcatcher. The film sucked major balls though. Can't believe I wasted money to see it in the theatres. Even Morgan Freeman couldn't save it from the butchering the director gave the story.

By far my favourite author. I'm currently working on reading his entire works. I have been on a pretty good reading kick since the beginning of 2006, before that I never really read at all. So i started reading his stuff in early 2006, I've accomplished a lot i think in this time 45 books read, plus I've read The Dark Tower series twice.

Last month I was lucky enough to see him speak publicly in Toronto, he read from Under The Dome for about 20 minutes and then he sat on stage with David Cronenberg and they had a conversation for an hour. It was quite the experince, one I will never forget.

Sweet. I was asking around in the movie thread if anyone knew where the old Stephen King thread was. This will work nicely.

I'm about 350 pages into Under the Dome now. Really liking it so far.

I am 500 pages into The Dark Tower book 7. I have read all of them in less than 2 months(for me that is really fast, considering I have a 6 month old). I can't put it down. It definitly gets a little strange in this book.

I've only read two books cover to cover without stopping. The Long Walk was one of them (Catcher in the Rye was the other).

First book I read by King was Salem's Lot, loved it on so many levels.

I am currently reading "It" and it's really great too. I love the way he writes and I love how many different levels the story has.

I read the whole series this spring/early summer on my Kindle and was pretty underwhelmed.

The last 3 books were a pretty big let down and I hated the ending. And a lot of book 4, and pretty much all of book 5, could have been omitted as they were pretty tangential to the main plot.

It wasn't bad by any means, bu twasn't worth the time investment for me. But I'm not a huge King fan either, have only read a couple other books. The Stand, Needful Things, Eye of the Dragon and maybe one or two others that are slipping my mind.

I do feel that King's 1999 accident caused him to rush finishing The Dark Tower series. I dislike some of the directions he took the later plot in, but loved the ending. Roland deserved nothing less.

Re: Stephen King: A Constant Reader's Thread

I just didn't dig it--though the ending is just a nit pick. I had more problems with just being overly long, the whole book about the Wolves being very minor to the overall plot, along with the flashback Wizard and Glass (though it was a good book on it's own merit). It just seemed like a lot of plot threads went nowhere, and while as a whole it was enjoyable, I didn't think it was worth the 4 months or so of reading time I put into it (leisure reading for me is just 30-60 minutes a few nights a week before sleeping).

But to each their own of course.

Don't say any more about the ending!

I loved Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla....but The Wastelands has been my absolute favourite so far.

I forgot about Gerald's Game - I made it about 150 pages in and gave up, really didn't like it at all.

Of all the books I finished and loved, Tommyknockers was the hardest read.
