Similarities Between Zac Brown Band and Dave Matthews Band?

Do you see any similarities between the two?

Does Zac Brown try and copy Dave?

No lol. He likes dmb and that's about it. Full on country (no one try and argue they're a rock band please). I love ZBB but no similarities.

Re: Similarities Between Zac Brown Band and Dave Matthews Band?

Both have a singer who plays acoustic guitar mainly

Both have a violin player who takes center stage occasionally

Both have a drummer and bass

Both played at that shit hole Marcus Amphitheater this summer instead of Alpine

Both played at alpine on July 4th 2010

Both have the lead singers name in the band

What the hell is the point of this thread? No I don't think ZB tries to copy Dave at all. He's a country artist.

They echo each other, and, I suppose, ZBB biffed DMB by the fact that DMB came around 20 years earlier. Both similar in concert atmosphere. But ZBB has evolved away from DMB, song-wise.

Phillip Phillips is another story though.

very few similarities. I know his violin player was a member of a DMB cover band, and I like their cover of ants but that is it. Zac does his own thing, he doesnt even compare to Phillip Phillips in terms of mocking Dave

That cover band eerily sounds identical to DMB.

there are actually a lot of similarities
listen to Overnight, All alright, sweet annie, Let it rain, Jump right in and Uncaged.

Thos are all songs i can see dmb playing. Obviously they are not completely the same as they are different artists but i think ZBB is relatively close to dmb in the fact that both are incredibly versatile groups

I will add that ZBB is one of the best openers Ive ever seen for DMB, and I love when he played Aint it Funny with Dave, great performance

Both groups have a great collection of musicians with grass roots beginnings. A lot of ZBBs hits were co-written by outsider Wyatt Durette, but the band still delivers regardless. These guys can play pretty much anything. Dave Grohl drooled over their capabilities when producing the most recent Grohl sessions.

ZBB has been the best opening act I have ever seen for DMB (saw them at PNC Park). ZBB closed their set with a RATM cover, Killing in the Name...great energy. I'd say its fair to say they have a similar approach, but they are both unique in their own ways. ZBB relies on vocal harmonies and the country vibe a lot more. I do think, however, that ZBB is closer to a DMB type band, than the typical country act.

People think this Ants cover is good? They turned it into country bullsh*t like any horrible country artist would generally do. I had never heard this until reading this thread, and it made me want to punch a kitten in the face it pissed me off so much. They pissed all over Ants Marching.

Re: Similarities Between Zac Brown Band and Dave Matthews Band?

I love both these bands, but I don't see a ton of similarities between them. ZBB is definitely more standard four chord progression-oriented musically and definitely more country (although their most recent release, the Grohl Sessions, is more rock than country). I think Zac himself is a better vocalist and guitarist than Dave, but other than that DMB is more talented at every other spot, IMO.

They're just very different from one another; nothing wrong with either, but they're hard to compare.

have you seen them lately? they are way more generic country pop than they were in the past.

True. They're newer material just doesn't have the same authenticity and true country feeling of Toes in the Water or Chicken Fried.

Perhaps they should shoehorn beer into more of their lyrics.

Re: Similarities Between Zac Brown Band and Dave Matthews Band?

I never thought of ZBB as a strictly country band. The Foundation, their first record, is definitely very country. But every record since then has progressively gotten less country and more rock. I think of their current sound as Southern rock, sort of like an updated version of the classic Southern rock groups (like an edgier Allman Bros./Skynyrd/CCR).

I can see some similarities with DMB in the fact that they both are influenced by many different genres of music. ZBB just isn't quite as creative/unique as DMB. But they're still very good and I enjoy their music tremendously. Grohl Sessions makes me very optimistic for their upcoming 2015 album.

I'm a big zac brown band, but at their edgiest, they are nowhere near edgier than the allman brothers.

when gregg allman sat in with zbb and did a couple allman songs they sounded watered down.

I think Dave Grohl gave a perfect description of ZBB and the direction they're heading as a band when talking about the Grohl Sessions Vol. 1:

    Quote:
"The band is so good they can be tracked live; we didn't fuck with computers, we tracked live, four-part harmonies around one microphone," Grohl tells Rolling Stone. "It's rocking. I didn't know what [the band] was [prior to this]. People are like, 'Oh, it's country.' 'No, it's not, it's like the Allman Brothers.' 'No, it's not, it's jam band.' I don't even know what you would call it, it's fucking great."

DMB's Ants sucks too so I wouldn't bother expecting Zac Brown Band to polish a turd that much if at all.
