The plane does know where it is, specifically where it is AGL. However, I highly doubt you will ever see a manned air frame with a system that a pilot cannot override.

TLL from press conference:

Captain went out of cabin to presumably go to the toilet.
Co-pilot deliberately locked Captain out of cabin.
Co-pilot adjusted Flight Management System to start descend.
Co-pilot did not answer to calls from both the captain and Marseille ATC.
Co-pilot was breathing until impact.
Apparently passengers weren't heard on voice recorder until right before the impact.

idk. i've never tried. but i feel like they beefed them up well enough after 9/11 to prevent most from doing so.

That's not the only reason they think it's intentional.

First off, it took manual intervention to make the airplane descend. See this Guardian article that confirms that the Co-Pilot would have had to manually descend the plane.

Secondly, the mechanism to unlock the door by punching in a code from the outside, was overridden from the cockpit. That would mean that the co-pilot was actively working to keep the pilot out, and knew what he was doing.

Towards the end of the video, you'll see where someone on the outside can punch in a code to unlock a door. A loud alarm sounds inside the cockpit to signal that the door will imminently be unlocked. After 30 seconds, the cockpit door unlocks for 5 seconds. Someone on the inside needs to override this 5-second unlock, and it seems that that's what the copilot would have done.

Pilots aren't allowed to take much in the way of prescriptions at all, let alone antidepressants its my understanding. So if someone had mental health issues, they aren't allowed to take something and still fly.

Didn't the FAA in 2010 change their stance? I know this was an EU flight, but it looks like the FAA allow four SSRIs to be used in certain circumstances - https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...tidepressants/

Although I believe the SSRI class of antidepressants, which I think have more noted suicidal risks, aren't as frequently prescribed in Europe.

So, after this incident, how many think planes will be redesigned to include a bathroom in the cockpit? No need to have a locking door, just make sure the door open inwards towards the bathroom. I'm actually shocked they don't already design planes this way.

Cockpits aren't very big to begin with. Can they realistically fit one? Maybe on larger planes...

This opens a whole new can of worms... Now we're opening planes up to being hijacked from hackers. Not that it would be easy, but if it happened, this sets up the hacker overriding the pilot. Very scary.
