Not gonna lie... I learned it from the wife. I used to struggle through giant burgers 2-handed like a slob while she'd cut hers in half... it took years, but I finally gave in seeing how much more comfortable and easy it was. She's also a bit nutty though... cuts stuff with a fork. Pancakes, omelets, softish stuff... That I will NEVER do.

For those that do A, once you're done cutting it up, do you then mix it up with all the sides? Because that's what I'm picturing.

    B, for me.

A seems dumb for a steak. Seems like all the individual pieces would get cold a lot faster than the a solid piece. I don't think I've ever seen an adult do this who wasn't giving the plate to a child afterward.

What's wrong with cutting up an omelette or pancakes with a fork? Why use an extra utensil when one does the job just fine?

Maybe this stems from being a college kid with no dishwasher in my house a few years ago, but why get something dirty if you don't need to? I mean, I have a dishwasher now, but it just seems like the efficient, practical thing to do.

If you need a knife to cut your omelette, you're eating at the wrong place.

I speak only for myself, obviously, but I am not a mixer. I think that's actually sort of nasty. And I order my steaks rare or medium rare, so it's never like the entire thing is piping hot to begin with, outside of the side of the steak that was on the cooking surface immediately before plating. I generally don't like my food to be piping hot, anyways.

Sometimes the softer stuff that you use one utensil to cut up, such as an omelet or pancakes etc, aren't so easy to stab the fork in and get a hold of. Also it is very flimsy if you try and scoop it with the fork and may fall off. There in lies the use of an extra utensil, because you are not using your fingers to balance the food onto the fork, like a child.

It's that goddamn squeeky noise that it makes when you hit the plate that really gets me. You know you're doing it with waffles too... no way around it.

Did not notice any squeaky noise when I cut my breakfast this am. Will provide video evidence following tomorrow's breakfast.

    Animal.

I've honestly had this conversation with my wife... she thinks I'm nuts to need a knife for pancakes and I KNOW she's insane for only using a fork.

I'm #teamfork and I've never, ever had this problem. Are you only able to cut massive pieces of those foods with a fork? I get bite-sized cuts with just a fork just fine. And I for sure never use my fingers to balance food on a fork, unless I'm eating alone and am being a savage.

Ya I mean, take Salmon for instance. Very easy to cut, but it could be tricky getting a hold of it with your fork after cutting it. Or it could be slippery trying to scoop it, might be easier just to bring a knife along. Same thing with an omelet. Very easy to cut with one fork, but after doing so, the contents in the omelet may become loose, knife then becomes handy.

    To answer your question, no.

I sometimes do A, sometimes B. Sometimes I grill a piece of bone-in meat and don't want all the bone on my plate, so I will cut it off the bone and usually go ahead and cut it up before I go sit at the table. Or it may be something like a piece of a roast, where I may cut it up or pull it apart a bit to add gravy or au jus over the top of the meat

For something like steak, or maybe a chicken breast, I never cut it all up at once, I cut it as I eat.

As with nearly everything in life, there is no definitive correct answer

No... this is different. You can get through cake/pie with a swipe of the fork. If you need to wiggle that fork to get through something (those breakfast foods generally), use a friggin knife.

Not sure if this is referring to me, but I said a knife becomes useful in certain occasions with soft foods, and I gave examples, where you would use it instead of using your fingers. Was merely playing devil's advocate. I never said you HAD to use it.

Re: How do you cut your meat? (Knife EtiquetteC)

Two years ago at a work party a co-workers daughter was at my dinner table and she seemed to be struggling cutting her steak, wrists at all sorts of odd angles, fingers dangling around the silverware with an odd reverse crane like grip, it was fascinating to watch. As she unsuccessfully tried to cut through the steak her knife would either bounce off of the top of it or just barely go through, it was like watching a cute monkey try to use chopsticks. There came a point where everyone else was towards the end of their meal and she was at the beginning, feeling bad and not sure what to say or do I tried asking her how her food was. She responded "I don't know, I'm having trouble, I'm going to go grab my mom". I then stated she wouldn't need to and got up, walked around the table, and cut her food ... this girl was in college. There is a lesson to be learned here fellow ants, don't be this example of option A.

She responded "I don't know, I'm having trouble, I'm going to go grab my mom". I then stated she wouldn't need to and got up, walked around the table, and cut her food ... this girl was in college. There is a lesson to be learned here fellow ants, don't be this example of option A.

If there's one thing in the world that doesn't need to be cut up first, it's breakfast foods. Pancakes, waffles, french toast.

    You're both psychos.
