College music today vs 2000's?

(After posting, I realized this might not belong in DMBc, my apologies)

My friends and I started going to DMB concerts in 2004. Between 2004 and 2010, the Gorge was a whole lot of 20 something's and even late teens. The parties at the campground were absolutely insane. People actually came to DMB weekends only to party at the campground and not go to the shows.

However, in the last few years, (obviously we all know this), I've noticed it's mainly upper 20s and 30s mixed with 40s as well. This came up because my friend who hasn't been to the Gorge since 2009 and has decided to come this year was asking about the campground parties. I told him they barely exist anymore. Instead, it's a bunch of 30 year olds hanging out having drinks. (Which is better in my opinion).

That leads me to my question, what are the late teens and early 20 somethings listening to and what concerts are they going to? Is it all this electronic/techno stuff? Like Paradiso, tomorrow land or what not etc?

Pop country seems to be what the college kids in my part of the world are partying to these days. If you wanna see a wild tailgate, go to a Luke Bryan or Blake Shelton show.

Here in Ohio it is PopCountry as Matthew said. Whole lot of Beer and Jag being consumed while blaring Luke Bryan, FGL, Jake Owen, ect. ect.

The flip side of the coin is the festival culture has exploded in the last 10 years with millennials, especially with the rise of Dubstep and EDM. Lots of molly, LSD, Weed, & other party drugs over the course of a 3 or 4 day weekend event. Why spend a couple hundred bucks to see 2 or 3 bands in one night when you can spend 400 or 500 for an entire weekend of bands and you aren't being hassled by police for partying the way you like?

Also, going to see 'Dave' isn't cool anymore. It hasn't been cool for quite some time.

Interesting. I forgot how Seattle is a little different. Not a whole lot of country out here at all so this question is probably more of a regional thing.

I would bet the youngins here are more into the dubstep Molly poppin then maybe areas like Ohio, Texas, etc.

    Festivals are the new camping.

Kids arent going to see DMB because they didnt grow up with them and DMB isnt stay relevant enough to gain young listeners.

I feel like college kids don't care about music anymore. Or they just listen to generic, run of the mill (regional) pop. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

They care about music just as much as any other generation. They prob just go about it differently

Yea the country music has invaded the North East College scene.

I was talking to a friend yesterday how when we were in high school/college nobody like country in Boston. Now the kids love it, country music tours are the only thing that sell out around here anymore. I don't think dubstep is very popular around here.

And high school kids seem to be still into like Panic at disco, fall out boy, those types of bands.

I mean, yeah no, you're prob right, I was speaking very generally. There are prob pockets of college kids that have a great taste in music and pockets who have an awful taste in music. I guess evolution has taken place from when I was in college. When I mention bands/artists to younger people that I'm into they have no clue who I'm talking about. But they could name bands/artists that I don't know. So, it's all relative I suppose?

Yep, every party I go to (living in MA) it is always country music now, which is convenient seeing as how I hate country music

Parties with country music? Wow. You wouldn't find one of those out here. Maybe out east in the boones.

It's so interesting how shit is different across the country.

Obviously being in NYC we get a little of everything BUT I guarantee you, on avg, EDM/DJ shows sell out faster than top indie acts here. As big as the indie scene is here, there are just as many bros and HS/college kids that love going to dance parties.

So many people i grew up with (age 25) are head over heals for pop country. It's honestly mind boggling as to how it became so popular up here.

As I get more into playing live music it's been interesting trying to play to the crowd and what they want to hear, most requests are for pop country songs. I played Two Step with my friend who is an absolutely insane lead player (it's a joke I'm on stage with him) and the crowd loved it, a few people asked if it was an original song.

I'm convinced it's about the lyrics, not the music so much. The last like 10-15 years have been filled with hits about how amazing everything is, how great (the singer's) life is, how awesome this party is, etc. And that hasn't really gone away. EDM doesn't really have words so something had to fill the lyrical void for people that don't love club hip-hop, R&B, etc as much.

So you get pop country, which yes has those sad bastard songs, but so many more are about hot girls, falling in love, drinking beers, having fun with friends, etc.

It's shit people want to sing along to.

Also, because college kids were younger than 10 the last time DMB released a new album worth listening to.

Lol. That's usually how it goes. My sister and an ex did the same thing.

Ex hated when I played dmb music in the car. We broke up, a year later she's face booking me saying she is hooked to "Dave concerts". In reality, she was just going because it was the "cool thing" to do.

Bro country/EDM/rap is big here and pretty much everywhere it seems like

Although there has been a huge influx of Phish/Dead/Panic/hippie shit here the past several years. There's always that crowd ya know.

Re: College music today vs 2000's?

Being from the South it's so funny to see people up North blaring country. Obviously this country is mainly rural and everyone in the country can relate to it better than someone in the city but I always pair country with the South/Southwest. Today's country is pretty much pop with a twang and I usually don't dig it but it is a fun concert with tons of eye candy. It's a good time. Easy music that you don't have to think about. 90's country is my favorite though. As big as counry is today no one was ever as big as Garth was in the 90's which is funny. Didn't mean to get off topic but just wanted to mention that.

ETA: i'm north of boston, and yeah, country is HUGE 'round these parts
