All the broccoli in the world? Let's say he only eats 1 pound of broccoli that night. 1 pound of broccoli = 136 calories (on average).

So, in one meal, his caloric intake is 826 calories.

It depends how long he's in the gym and what exercises he does. 10 minutes on a bike isn't going to burn many calories at all. So, let's say he eats three meals a day that are all similar in caloric intake. So, 3 x 826 = 2,478 calories in a day.

I'm not going to claim to be a Doug or Laura or Lindz and know about exercise and shit but it seems to me that is quite a number of calories just from food. If you tack on the beer, which I think he said he can't just have 1, so let's say just a 6 pack of empty calories of Guinness. 1 pint of Guinness contains 210 calories. 210 x 6 = 1,260 calories.

If you're daily, or average, caloric intake is 4,738, I'm thinking to see the results he may want will take a bit better rationing of portion size or working out harder and/or incorporating cardio.
The frozen, skinless, boneless chicken breasts I eat are 5 oz portions and are 150 calories each. 690 calories for three chicken breasts seems outrageously high. 2,478 calories in one day is not a lot either. It obviously varies from person to person, but between sleeping and just doing nothing, it's not uncommon to burn more than 2,000 calories a day. Add in weightlifting for an hour at moderate intensity and you might burn 500 calories. That's 2,500 calories burned right there. You're in a deficit and hence going to lose weight over time.

I'm not saying you shouldn't incorporate cardio, it just sounded like you were saying eating chicken and veggies after working out was bad. If he eats clean foods like that and workouts and is still in caloric excess, he might put weight on in terms of what the scale says, but I guarantee you his composition is going to look a lot better because he'll be adding muscle.

Really, the beer is what needs to be cut.

And obviously I wasn't saying you necessarily should eat three chicken breasts in one meal (unless you're trying to really bulk), but I was just saying you could and it wouldn't be that bad.

Eh, depending on the workout it seems like that could be bad.

But, I agree, if you're trying to bulk up a lot of chicken would be the way to go.

The bottom line I'm getting at is that you need to ration portion size regardless (for the most part) of what you eat.

Yeah, you definitely need to ration out portion size a bit, especially if you're not a clean eater.

Have you ever tried tracking your calories though? It's amazing how much good/healthy food you can eat and still not pack on that many calories. For example, here's a sample day of what I eat. I'm trying to add muscle while burning off fat. This is the highest number of calories of clean food that I can physically manage to stomach in a day for the most part.

    Breakfast
    1 serving French Vanilla Coffee
1 serving Natural Peanut Butter with Honey
1 serving Oats Cereal Cinnamon Roll (Instant, Dry, Fortified)
    2 servings Roundy's Large Eggs
1 serving Syntha-6 Cookies & Cream Protein Shake

    Lunch
    1 serving Baby carrots
1 serving Fat Free Skim Milk
1 serving Reduced Fat Deli Style Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese
1 serving Reduced Fat Mayo with Olive Oil
1 serving Select 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins
    1 serving Spicy Brown Mustard
    1 serving Sweet Peas
    1 serving Turkey Burger - Plain (Jennie-O)

    Dinner
1 serving Fat Free Skim Milk
    1 serving grilled southwest salad
    3/4 serving southwest salad dressing

    Snacks
1 serving 100% Casein Protein Powder Gold Standard - Cookies & Cream
1 serving Apple Cinnamon Non-fat Greek Yogurt
    1 serving Banana
1 serving Cookies 'n Cream Carb Conscious Bar
    1 serving Dry Roasted Almonds
1 serving Syntha-6 Cookies & Cream Protein Shake

In my opinion, that's quite a bit of food/drink intake. 2570 calories, 200g net carbs, 215g protein, 86g fat. I lift 4 days a week and do cardio for 30 minutes probably 2 times a week. I rarely step on the scale, but I would bet I haven't lost much in terms of numbers, but I've definitely leaned out and put on a bit of muscle. Like I said, this is my absolute highest day recently of eating clean food. Usually I'm around ~2100 for the day.

You really think I was serious with my first reply? That's hilarious. Simply fucking hilarious. I don't give a shit about what you said. You need to lighten up a little bit.

Good for you for sticking through the bad most people wouldn't.

And thanks for the permission, I will continue to "bitch" about the White Sox and Brent Morel's terrible playing. He's about as big of a joke as it gets at this point.
