So #41, Crush, Two Step, and Rapunzel is the garbage part I'm assuming? That's probably the best set of the tour, and it's actually a pretty decent festival set.

On a side note, I'm listening to the 4-17 show and it's nice that Dave brought the falsetto back in DDTW. It sounds so much better than screaming.

Oh right, the "DMB is too old to play one set shows" thread. Meanwhile, they just played 5 of them in Australia, and there's going to be no opening acts this year so they're going to play more songs, and they're probably going to play 3+ hours of music every night as opposed to 2.5 like they usually do.

Sets were really bad -- uncreative, predictable and lacking in even some of the more common classic staples.

And I absolutely expected this to be the case, but I'm not sure why people think that makes it any better.

Yep that's the one! They just played 5 shows that were not only one set but were one set shows that got graded a C or lower overall by the poll. The last 4 summers have been way below par and a lot of if has to do with an increase in age, which affects the F.I.T.T. Principle. This is why they are changing to a 2 set format.

Frequency: Amount of shows played per week or total combined over the summer. Less 2 night shows and stops on the tour.

Intensity: Energy and caloric expenditure over a period of time. V02 max decreases with age. Arthritis can affect this as well.

Time: Yes, time. Short compared to long. Longer the time on stage, longer the time on the road, longer the time using repetitive movements are causing an increase in physical ware and year. Especially over the age of 50. Increases in muscle and voice repair time are necessary.

Type: Type of activity. Choosing songs or sets that are easier and less complex. Types of songs that are easier on the joints. Ex. Boyd being turned down due to arthritis. You can see it with the bow drops now. Also, Carter using more double bass pedal due to the wrists. He needs more than golf gloves to fix that issue.

2 set format will hopefully help fix these problems. They are too old to play one set shows

None of this still makes any sense. They're going to play longer shows and have more stage time in 2014, which requires more effort, and they have a run late in the tour where they're playing 7 shows in 10 days (within that run, there are two 3 day stops). Stop trying.

The only way I'd feel accurate in voting in this poll was if I caught one of the shows. On paper, I wouldn't give them a very high grade, but performance wise? I dunno.

Didn't even know they were on tour already. Looking at the sets though pretty much seals the deal for me that I won't be attending a show this summer for the first time since I began seeing them in 2006. Especially since my local show isn't at alpine but Northerly Island.

The summer tour hasn't stared yet, these were festival sets in Australia and they were promoting a lot of their more recent stuff.

Luckily, the Northerly Island shows are in July and you'll have plenty of time to change your mind after the tour starts

We'll see. I, by nature, set expectations. I just do. Alpine last year was such a let down that all I wanted to do the second night was hang out in the lot grilling and drinking beers. Turns out it would've been more fun. Also, I can only imagine how horrible the crowd will be at those shows. Infested with high school bros and their teenage slam pieces chugging water bottles of vodka, puking their brains out, and then proceeding to go into the venue to see "DAVE!!" Call me grumpy, but I can think of so many better ways to spend my 4th of July.

Edit: if they start playing sets that resemble those from 2004 and before, then I would go.

This Australian swing was the equivalent of pro sports teams pulling their starters the last week before the playoffs.

You are like teaching a retarded bird how to fly. You just can't, so you let it die.
But I'll try and save you one last time...

They might play a "longer" show in terms of playing 2 sets but each band member will not be playing as long in duration as they do during 1 set shows. During 1 set shows each band member is pretty much on stage for 2-3 hours straight playing or standing or both. In a 2 set format, there will be significant rest periods, especially between sets and during the accoustic set where there will be different combinations of DMB. They will still play a 3 hour show but differently. With more rest. At 50, with arthritis or joint pain, would u rather run 5 miles straight through? Or would you rather use intervals ( switch between walking and running) to minimize the pain/weakness?

No idea why they are playing that much in a 10 day period. Wouldn't suggest it but it's probably due to schedule reasons. And if I were going one of those 3 night shows I would definitely go to N1. By N3, they will be hurting.

They're probably not going to do anything crazy on a continent they rarely play. They're not doing the 2 set thing yet, plus Boyd is hurt.

And the saddest part for me is that those are my bottom 4 songs. Rooftop would actually be replaced by Gaucho, but still, there are so many good songs off that album that they're not playing.

That's a horrendous stat. I know Boyd is struggling but damn. Boyd is the main reason why they are not bringing back Lillywhite. AFTW was awesome and the best songs were heavy on the violin. Broken things (like Boyd) won't happen often. Boyd just can't translate his studio play with live play which makes sense. In the studio he can do retake after retake. Lillywhite loves what Boyd brings but the band knows he can't handle it so they have to find a new sound. The album is still great, you Just won't hear the good ones live. The next album will be more like Big whiskey.

Boyd screwed himself by playing tennis with that fucker Andy rodDick. Too many top spin forehands and one handed backhands at 40 Will about do it.

Watchtower from Bluesfest N1 is outstanding. Tim and Warren had a guitar duel, and Warren sang the last verse. Very good standout performance in a string of below average shows.

Would Sacrifice new songs not translating well live for killer Boyd studio tracks every single time. Big Whiskey II could be devastatingly bad.

I actually agree with you on something.

As much as the band loves Big Whiskey, this new work with Cavallo is gonna yield new songs that probably sound like Big Whiskey, and are going to be played just as much, causing the band to move further away from their roots and play their classic library even less.

We saw how much dominance Big Whiskey has had in sets since it's release, and if this new album sounds like Big Whiskey II, it's probably going to take up just as much of the set.
