I wouldn't put rooftop anywhere near Baby Blue, but most of DMBzilla's list is spot on.

I love em' both. I can't really compare them, as their styles are completely different, but both albums are incredible in their own way.

I would have Dive In much higher in terms of BW songs, that is probably my 2nd favourite tied with Baby Blue just behind LITHOG. Drums are great in that song, lyrics are cool and the break > Tim solo is terrific.

IIRC, that's Dave playing lead guitar, not Tim. Still a great song, though.

Sounds an awful lot like Tim, and Dave plays acoustic live with Tim playing a very similar solo to the one on the album. What makes you think this?

It was in a column Jake wrote (http://antsmarching.org/columns/column.php?columnid=68) around the time BW was released:

    Quote:
That’s me [on lead guitar]. Unlike the solo in ‘Funny the Way It Is,’ this one I sort of sat down and put together with Rob [Cavallo, the producer], so that’s different. It’s a guitar ‘piece.’ I guess it’s a solo.
Pretty cool, if I'm interpreting it correctly.

Wrong. I became a fan in 2003, and love Big Whiskey. Love it far more than AFTW, too.

    I like this post.

I think AFTW is easier to listen to than BW. It's easier on the ears. I love the acoustic qualities of it and like everyone else, yes, I hope it gets played more live. On the other hand, AFTW lacks some of the power that BW has.

Feel the same way. It's amusing to see the responses to a positive post about Big Whiskey. I absolutely love Broken Things, it's a top 15 or 20 song for me, but the rest of the album does not hold up to the quality of BW for me as a whole.

Yeah, Broken Things is a fantastic song. Would love to catch it live someday. I've also come to enjoy Rooftop, Sweet, and BBN is just simple fun. But if I reach for an album to spin between the two, it's almost always BW.

BW. Can't wait to see what this band can do with Cavallo without Roi's influence, if Cavallo signs on as producer.

BW just does very little for me. I guess I don't like the vibe of the whole album. I never got into that whole down south/New Orleans style sound they tried. AFTW is easily my favorite of the two. It's more acoustic than BW and the band sounds tighter.

Still AFTW for me, a perfect blend of old and new DMB. Been listening a good deal to Big Whiskey and the SOUND of that record has got me really excited to hear more DMB produced by Cavallo. Love them both to death

AFTW in my opinion almost seems rushed. Like DMB came up with songs and didn't fully develop them lyrically and musically like they had done before. The whole process of just the album being announced and released it all seemed pretty fast. Now that's not entirely bad because you get to see them at a raw stage of creativity and improve. Ryan Adams released three albums in one year because he wanted people to see him as a genius who could create anything and put it down on a record. Some of those songs he did are fantastic songs some I love, others suck. Same with AFTW. While DMB may have rushed AFTW in my opinion some of the songs they made are GREAT and that makes it even more impressive in which the time they took. However a lot of the songs are duds, unoriginal, and very simple in sound because they didn't develop them.

BWGK Dave had an entire summer tour pretty much to develop proper lyrics And develop the songs. Plus DMB had a strict vision of what BWGK was going to be.

BWGK I think is a more complete album mainly because of the lyrics and every song on it has more creativity behind it.

AFTW is more of the DMB sound. I think if Dave spent half the time on it as he did with BWGK it would have been a stellar album. I like it more than BWGK though because of the fact that they did miss on some songs but the songs they did hit on. They were stellar songs better than anything on BW. (Ex. Snow, BT, Drunken.)

Wait, what? Big Whiskey was completed long before their 09 summer tour. None of those songs got road tested. When they debuted, they were already well finished.

I may be off on that. It was a little while ago. My impression was they had finished off all the songs and Dave had yet to write lyrics for them. Until they returned to the studio to write them. Maybe somebody can clarify that for us. But I thought they finished the album with no lyrics. In which I assumed Dave worked on for a good bit during the tour. I could be wrong though.

I like the song ranking game, so I'm gonna do that, too:

Lying in the Hands of God
    Snow Outside
    Baby Blue
    Why I Am
    Broken Things
    Seven
    Gaucho
    Funny the Way it Is
    Alligator Pie
    If Only
    Shake Me Like a Monkey
    The Riff
    Squirm
    Belly Belly Nice
    Rooftop
    Belly Full

    You & Me
    Dive In
    Time Bomb
    Drunken Soldier
    Sweet

    Spaceman
    Mercy

A more even distribution than I thought I'd have. Still prefer BWGK.

Lyrically of course it's not but baby blue is the most over rated song on these boards. It's ok on the album but one I would never care too see live.
