What Makes DMB Unique?

Dave's Guitar Riffs.
Violin & Horns.
Carter's Drumming.

These are the first ideas that pop into my head.

A rock/pop band bringing this kind of instrumentation to the mainstream market. Dave's vocals. And of course Dave's ability to sing about Head as much as he does and it not equating to gangsta rap.

    Good call on vocals.

    LOL at singing about head!

Constant touring nd unpredictable sets compared to other main stream rock bands.

The overarching happiness throughout most of the catalog.

As others have mentioned the unique instrumentation and musicianship of the members.

DMB 1991-2000 was one of the most unique bands of all time. Now they're just another pop/rock band.

It's similar in terms of arrangments and overall feel, just with the use of more electric guitars. I think Big Whiskey and Away From the World are awesome and still unique!

    Dave's guitar is non-existent.
The violin is also drowned / being phased out. Arguably worst shift in sax sound possible.
    Drumming is obnoxious and forced.

Those great qualities you listed in the OP are basically describing a completely different band than current DMB.
    And it's kind of depressing.

I hear ya, and when composing this thread I was thinking mostly of early DMB. However, I enjoy the hell outta Big Whiskey and Away From the World. I think they are still unique, the melodies are still very Dave, song strcutures are not forced and still have that great flow, and they still have great solos live.

The worst part about hearing AFTW live, excluding having to hear AFTW live, was not just watching the too few times Boyd finally got to play or solo but also hearing literally no violin during it.
Horrible moments to be a DMB fan.

The only other person capable of filling this role in the band right now isn't a founding member either (hint: it's not Tim...).

    Daves phenomenal dancing skills
The fact that there is a Dave song for every mood you could possibly be in
    His tours
    The blend of instrumentation
The contagious energy that the band performs with
And I think its fair to say that the band has a unique use of time signatures (Like in "You Never Know" and "Seven")

Everything about them! Well, initially anyway.

Now I don't really know. I mean, you still don't see many popular bands of their magnitude with a horns section and violin on stage. Even though the violin may as well not be on stage.

    Carter still brings it, though.

Plus their music is incredibly original, carter is a god, dave's singing and intensity is emotionally captivating, and the horn licks rashawn comes up with are unrivaled.

Ugh, one of the things I dislike most about today's DMB. Those incessant riffs that aren't that melodic or interesting in any way that you can count on to be all over any Boyd or Tim solo. Just plain annoying!

My biggest gripe with the current state of the band is it's lack of Boyd. I just don't get what's going on there and why he's so drowned out. They had Butch and Tim back in winter 98 and you can hear Boyd perfectly fine so it's clearly something to do with how he's mixed. We all know he's just completely turned down during the Belly Belly Nice solo. We've all seen him sawing away during that section but hear nothing. What makes me even more annoyed is that when they release soundboard recordings you can hear him just fine and he sounds great. The horn section has completely changed it's sound with less improv and more set lines. That coupled with Tim's shredding and the lack of Boyd have completely changed the sound of the band. At least if Boyd were more prominent in the mix there would be more of that true DMB sound, but he's just nowhere to be found on some tunes. This past summer was the best it's been in awhile, but he's still missing every now and then. One of the big reasons I loved the acoustic set was because you could really hear Boyd. Just sounded like more old school DMB to me. I've said this before, but one of the best mixes I've heard on a tape of this lineup is from the two nights at Mansfield 2012. You can hear Boyd on everything and it sounds awesome. There's no reason you can't have him up more in the mix and get a more DMB sounding DMB!

Gripe #2. Rashawn Ross. Didn't like him when he joined in 06 and still don't. He completely ruins the true DMB sound and does absolutely nothing for me. I wish so badly the only horn in the band was Jeff. Anytime Jeff gets a great solo going Rashawn has to jump in and start screeching over top of it. He is a showboat and plays with very little taste or dynamic. We hear a lot of people complain about Boyd being out of tune, but how does no one notice that Rashawn is just as bad? His main goal is to play as loud and high as possible and all it does is result in ear piercing out of tune solos. It will never happen, but Rashawn should get the boot. For whatever reason Dave seems to have a hard on for the guy. Too bad, the music would be WAY better without him.
