Kings of Leon Appreciation Thread

I know we have an Only By the Night thread, but we need one for discussion.

In my mind, they are the best rock group currently preforming and touring right now. Im sure there will be alot of MMJ is better, In my opinion, they are pretty different, and each good in their own right. Have to get that out of the way.

I got introduced to them through the e-net, anyways I got hooked, really hooked, in two weeks. For some reason I fell in love with Youth and Young Manhood, then moved to Only By the Night (3 Grammy Nominations ), Then Aha Shake Heartbreak, and finally what I think could be the best, Because of the Times. I don't know how i ended up so fortunate to fall in love like 2 weeks before they came to Saint Louis. It was one of the best shows I have ever experienced. Since then, ive slowly learned everything I can about the band, and collected ANY music by them I can get my hands on.

[/rant]

What do you think of KoL?

Listen to it, and if you hate it, come back, and i will just give you another.

You know who told me about them? Kjam

I hated the first 2 albums he gave me, Aha Shake and the newest one (OBTN).

I had to go to their 1st one in order to fall in love, and it clicked.

Aha Shake Heartbreak will forever be one of my favorite albums. So strange I never here this CD get anyway love. Probably wouldn't be a fan if it wasn't for this. Track after Track of just awsomeness. Youth, Young, & Manhood was also great, and the newer stuff is good but doesn't come close to touching the old style.

crazy question. Is the song "Soft" on Aha Shake Heartbreak about him not being able to get a boner? Because that is what it sounds like.

I appreciate and fucking love the old KOL (Aha and Youth) but think that the new KOL blow (OBN and BOT). Aha is one of my favorite albums, but man did these guys just do a 180 with these last two albums. Really disappointed.

Back in 2003 I thought these guys would really be true to their roots/sound, and once again popularity rears its ugly head and ruins another band.

I love these guys. All four albums are fantastic. BOTT is definitely my favorite, it captures the new and old sounds pretty well. Really want to see them live!

Maybe ruined was a bad choice of wording. I just thought that Only by Night and BC of the Times were really lacking the southern style Rock and Roll that I've come to expect/love from them.

There are a couple good tracks on each album respectively, but overall most of their 'newer' songs have very poor lyrics and seem like commonplace overproducted radio pop songs. "Use Somebody" is the perfect archetype of what I am talking about. Sounds like they're trying too hard to sound like Coldplay/U2 as opposed to just fucking rocking out like they used to.

The Kings are probably my top 5 favorite band ever..

The only problem is...they have gone down since the beginning

Their albums have gotten progressively worse...

JB you criticize, but you are right. Thats exatly why i fell in love with early KoL. I think in order to still really enjoy everything about them you need to enjoy their old sound, and their new sound, Which i do.

It depends on the person, I still fucking love everything about their albums. All of them.

This band has been working their ass off for years, and its finally paying off. Going from 2500 seats at the pageant in saint louis, which was said to never sell out for Kol, did. Now they are headed to MSG soon. GO KoL GO.

I saw them back in 05 or 06, I forget, at Radio City for the first time. I had heard of them and had heard a few songs and liked it, but wasn't overly impressed. Then I got tix through work so I went and it is easily the best show I've ever been to by a band I wasn't familiar with.

Then I just saw them at Webster Hall a couple months ago and it was significantly less awesome for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they didn't seem to evolve or grow in that year or so between shows. It was like the same show, but less badass. They play the song, move on to the next, play the song, move on to the next.

I'm really hoping their MSG show doesn't suck, I think it's a little too big for a band with little stage presence to play, but maybe they'll pull out some awesome shit. I love the band, but that last show sort of made me sad haha.

Say what you want about the new album, but Notion and Crawl are awesome songs. I really love the use of the bass in this band's songs. The riffs are always pretty cool.
