Re: Blind melon

Great band. If they had a chance to make more music, I suspect they'd be among my favorite bands today.

It's such a shame that for most people, they're only known by No Rain. I didn't bother listening to them because of that song, but once I delved into more stuff, I immediately liked them.

What I don't understand is why songs like change and toes across the floor didn't get bigger. They're just as catchy as no rain

great songs make you not get further into bands? you are one of "those" people eh?

you also say that you didnt bother listening to them because of No Rain, but once you did, you liked them...soooo, you did bother to listen to other songs and No Rain actually didnt stop you

I think you're reading a little too into what he said

Plenty of people only knew no rain and then realized they liked their other stuff when they took the time to listen, myself included. No rain is the only hit they ever had and you can still hear it everywhere to this day

I understand that some people only heard the hit, which is unfortunate..but what this person was saying is that they didnt want to go further into the catalogue specifically because of No Rain...I dont get that...they then say that they did go into the other stuff, in the very next sentence..

edit: unless the inferrence is that he thinks No Rain is shit???

At first he heard only no rain, then later he decided to explore.

Ive known no rain for 15 years and never bothered to listen to any of their other stuff. Then a buddy of mine played me part of nico and I was hooked. It's not an uncommon story.

Once I delved into the rest of their catalogue, independent of No Rain, I liked them. The song itself was so overplayed and, I thought, not good enough to merit checking out any more of their stuff. I still skip it whenever I listen to their albums.

gotcha...I wasnt clear that you actually didnt care for "No Rain"...thought it was just a dont like it cuz its popular type of thing...

that said, I still cant see how someone can like the rest of the catalogue but hear No Rain and be turned off...but! to each his own!

No rain is far happier/poppier than anything else in their catalog. Its the kind of song your mom probably sings along to. that tends to turn people off

    i still love it though

I don't right now. I've been having fun ripping the 'write a letter to a friend of mine I tell him how much I used to love watch him smile' part and my bud is nuts on the electric.

I've been a fan of the band since I was a kid. Such an amazing band, Shannon I think had one of the best voices ever. Something really worth checking out is the Behind The Music special, it can be found broken up into parts on YouTube. Some of my favorite tracks would be

    Soul One
    Vernie
    Galaxie
    Glitch
    Whoa Dog
    Ever Had A Feeling
    Holyman
    The Duke

Way back when I was learning guitar I know "No Rain" was one of the tunes I started out with. It was in a movie and I seemed to really enjoy that tune so I decided to learn it. It was that movie where those three (or 4 was it?) dudes go on a trip to find DB's treasure, the guy who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars and jumped out of the plane with it. They go on the trip for a friend that passed away because it was always a dream of theirs to find it. They were all best friends. Someone has to know what I am talking about.

When I was in college, Shannon Hoon's death hit me way harder than Kurt Cobain's. There was so much unfulfilled potential in this band. To this day, a Blind Melon playlist is part of my on-the-road music. My favorite album of their is Soup, largely because of "Mouthful of Cavities" and "St. Andrew's Fall." But their other stuff is great too. "Life Ain't So Shitty" (from Nico) is something I habitually turn to when I find myself in emotionally dark places.
