The beauty of music is that when put into different context a song can take on a whole new meaning. From the sounds of his "behind the scenes" interview, the goal of the special is to aim the light at the dangers and seriousness of endangering different species and our planet. "Save Me" has always come off as an obvious story about Jesus and his 40 days and nights in the desert, and the Devil's attempts to tempt him. However, it can also pertain to anyone really. A song about desperation and what would you do to be saved. In normal context it's clear to me that it's just the Devil tempting Jesus and asking him to save him to prove himself. But in this context it can be implied that maybe our world is in need of a little saving, and we as a people are kind of like the Devil in terms of seeing what's wrong with the world but always looking the other way for someone else to "save it". Maybe it's time we all work together and save it ourselves. Which is basically Jesus to the Devil at the end of the song, "you might try saving yourself". As in, its not always up to God or a higher power to do everything for you.
I think it works perfectly.
