Grab Selection For Friends. Did You Get My Message is great. The jam on Song For a Friend is amazing. Dude is a stud on guitar.

The 35-minute "Welcome to Schuba's" off Selections for Friends is such a cool track.

For what it's worth, at the Carnegie Hall show with Toca he said he'd be back after the album is done.

    not sure what your expectations are but I think his new stuff is good. Saw him live in Sept. of last year and he/they played;

The world as I see it; really good, jazzier/funkier live than studio
93 million miles: very similar to studio
I won't give up: he did this with Toca to open the encore, real nice song
Frank D. Fixer: this is a song about his grandfather and it was good

listen to it a few times and let it set in. I think he's great live; don't let the mellowness of the studio turn you off.

Loving that Christina Perri is his opening act. Her album is fucking terrific.

Bought Gorge tickets. This will be my 6th Mraz show. He's always solid live.

I also like that he's will calling nearly all the tix, so scalping will be virtually non-existent.

love the fact that all of the good seats at his shows are going to be paperless. have to show the cc that you bought the tickets with, and if you want to resell the ticket, you can on the website but for no more than 20% of the face value.

I'm actually pretty okay with the music. There seems to be much more going on as far as guitar work and textures, and less awful horn lines. It's a personal taste thing, but he almost completely lost me the last time I saw him when his horn line had horrible horrible dance moves. I just don't like that sound at all.

Some of the songs are pretty good, but I just find I'm having trouble taking him seriously as an artist lyrically. I thought he used to be a good, or at least clever, lyricist. On the new album examples of lyrics are:

    - Makes me feel good, and when I feel good I sing.
    - Living in the moment, living my life, easy and breezy, peace in my mind.
    - Let's sing to be happy, to feel things, to communicate and be heard
    - It's not hard for me to love you, hard for me to love you, no it's not a difficult thing.

They just feel delivered extremely cheesily. I really like a few songs, like 5/6, 93 Million Miles, and Who's Thinking About You Now. And I really liked the first single. But there are just songs on there that make me cringe. It is definitely a more mellow album, and I like most the music, it just seems very straightforward and I'm used to him being a little more adventurous.

    Re: Jason Mraz

I actually dig the simplicity of the album. I think attending the Mraz/Toca acoustic show at Carnegie Hall back in November has me totally at ease with this style. That was one of the best, if not THE best musical performances I've ever witnessed and he played most of these songs. I really came to appreciate the laid back Mraz and I think this album is exactly what you saw if you attended the acoustic tour. Sure, it's not the best album in the world, but it's something I can easily see myself listening to in full. It's a total summer album.

I wish 93 Million Miles stayed acoustic. Same with Woman I Love. But other than that, like I said, it's kind of what I expected of the new album after seeing him play the songs live and hearing him talk about how he wanted to go back to the basics with this album.

Excellent post! I agree the guitar work is good and really showed up in the live show. It was different than when I had seen him before. The horns can be a little much. The person next to us at the show wished that he no longer used them. Good stuff about the lyrics.

i agree that alot of his lyrics are not as good as they were when he first came around. He still has good ones here and there, but i do feel the overall quality is a bit down. Still love the songs though. I will say, that you can't blame him for lyrics on freedom song, since its a cover.

agreed this is a summer album. I think with the way the album and tour is being promoted this was what he was targeting.

I really do miss the waiting for my rocket to come Mraz. Sadly I am already skipping some of the songs on the new album, can't say that for anything prior to we sing we dance we steal things with the exception of a few songs. That being said.. he is still one of my favorite musicians and his live shows are tons of fun

Just listened to the album again. It's very easy to listen to. Very very smooth. Like I said, not my favorite, but I haven't been a Mraz fan for the past 10+ years because of his album releases.

All in all, Mraz is awesome, but stubborn and close-minded people here on Ants will tell you otherwise.

I didn't realize Freedom Song was a cover. Not that it makes it much better that he chose to include that cheesefest. It's not like he was saddled with it against his will.

That song is just an explosion of awesome. Extremely clever too. One of my favorite parts is when he goes "... how p-e-r-f-e-c-t your a-t-t-i-t-u-d-e isssss..." Just a fun, great song.
