Re: Preseason NCAA Basketball Poll is released
kentucky vs. wisconsin is just an amazing matchup. so many colliding forces.
you can make a very convincing case that kentucky's is the best defense over the kenpom era (2002-today). they are by far the best defensive team going on raw points per possession, but of course offensive efficiency as a whole has gone down over the past few years, so when you compare their defense to the greater landscape, you can make arguments that maybe there have been 1 or 2 better defensive teams. still, the point remains: no team over the past 13 seasons has allowed fewer points per possession than kentucky.
on the other hand, there is no argument as far as wisconsin goes. they are the best offensive team over the past 13 years, and there's no two ways about it. they have scored more points per possession than any team over the last 13 years, and did it against a very formidable defensive strength of schedule.
both teams have just tons of size.
wisconsin has a great deal of experience; of course kentucky is the opposite.
wisconsin gets very few bench minutes, kentucky obviously gets more from their bench than almost any team in basketball.
wisconsin never, ever turns the ball over and kentucky turns their opponents over a ton.
I think the difference is in kentucky's offense vs. wisconsin's D. Kentucky is a very good offensive team, on balance, and wisconsin is just mediocre on D.
Very very excited to see it though.
EDIT: forgot one; kentucky is an amazing offensive rebounding team; wisconsin is one of the best in the country at keeping their opponents off the offensive glass
