Song Origins: One Arm Steve
Hi [Burnthday], your message found me well and living in Ireland. Sorry to say my Panic photos are stashed away in the US. But to the "story"; where to start? I was working as a stage hand for the BIG Panic show on Washington Street; knowing that there was going to be a hugh crowd, I figured that was the best way to be able to see and enjoy the show. Just before the 2nd set, Garo Vereen found me and said that the boys wanted to see me before they went back on stage. I went over to the entrance of the 40 Watt and the guys all circled around me. They then asked if it would be alright by me if they played a new song called "One Arm Steve". I said yes, no worries and went back to my spot stage left. Michael Stipe came up and stood next to me as Panic started the 2nd set with "One Arm Steve". Now to how it all came to be: Panic was playing a show at the GA Theatre, it was a sell out, all kinds of people were trying every trick in the book to get in. T Lavitz was sitting at the bar, his Hammond organ was on stage, Jo Jo had played the night before with Beanland. Things are starting to get busy, it is almost time for the band to start when Jo Jo comes up to the door where I was taking tickets and tried to come in, I stopped him, he had no ticket and he wasn't on the guest list. He said he was in the band and I pointed to the promo picture of Panic that we had taped to the box office window and said "Come back when your picture's on the wall", and would not let him in. Then Dave came up from behind me and told me that Jo Jo was the band's new keyboard player. Then Jo Jo was allowed to join the band."
