Robyn Adele Anderson (Postmodern Jukebox) Space Between cover

Was pretty surprised. I'm not a fan of her solo covers, but she's great in Postmodern Jukebox.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExU8WjqUNIc

IMO pretty bland, but good vocal performance

Musically that was fine, but her voice did absolutely nothing for me with that song.

Seeing this made me think about what other bands have covered DMB, and I found this version of Zac Brown Band doing Stay. Whether it was the song choice or that band's sound, I felt DMB translated much better to their sound. Anyway, this is for anyone's consideration.

This might be the worst DMB cover I've ever heard.

EDIT: The comments on this video are so bad...

"woah you even make dave matthews sound good"

"because of you, you make me love jazz so much!!"

Guys, c'mon. Covers by Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox are not meant to be replicas of the original. They are famous because they rework modern songs into the vintage sounds of jazz and swing. It's truly unique and quite impressive. The band and rotating vocalists are actually pretty damn incredible. Girlfriend and I saw them at an old theater here in Santa Barbara and we were blown away walking out of there that night. It was pure entertainment. Excellent musicians and a comedy show in between songs. Each vocalist truly has some pipes.

Their cover choices might not appeal to most of the DMB fanbase, but just the idea and production behind the whole thing is great IMO. You have to appreciate good talent when you see it.

I suggest watching some of their other covers on YouTube. They release a new one each week and many are filmed in a single take. Check out Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne, Radiohead's Creep, All About That Bass, Macklemore's Thrift Shop, Blurred Lines, Sweet Child O' Mine, etc. Newest: Shaggy - It Wasn't Me

Highly suggest catching them on tour if they come anywhere near your home. You won't regret it!

I guess I'm just REALLY not a fan of their vintage sounds of jazz and swing then. Her voice is just a little too much to listen to as well, especially on a Monday morning.

Go check out a Parov Stelar show. "Modern" Jazz that will REALLY blow you and your girlfriend away.

I'm not one to quickly dismiss others' covers of DMB songs. While others didn't like Stevie Nicks's cover of Crash Into Me, I at least thought it was flattering a legend like her would go out of her way to cover the song. This one just doesn't sound good to me.

It is way too upbeat in a weird way, Space Between shouldn't have the same feel as "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox

If you rework a song in to a dog turd, it is a dog turd. I will not click on any of those links because I just picked up after my dog and am all turded out for the day.

I listened to some of the other covers including Creep. The others weren't that bad but the arrangements were fairly close to the original. I usually enjoy covers with new and unique arrangement but this Space Between was jarring.

This is not a Postmodern Jukebox cover, she left the band and started doing her own covers (the same idea, just very poorly done).
If this were a PMJ cover, I think they'd actually do a pretty good job.

    Yeah, that was terrible.

The problem with intentionally sounding "vintage" is that it almost always comes off very inauthentic and hamfisted. This is one of those times.

Also, see Lady Gaga's contribution to her Tony Bennett collaboration.

Re: Robyn Adele Anderson (Postmodern Jukebox) Space Between cover

I wouldn't consider that jazz. Its jarring, bordering on appalling. The tempo and i guess emotion are really strange. I like covers of songs, especially when done in different ways from the original but this awful. I think this song could be done by Jasmine Thompson, at least I think that's the person I'm thinking of, I can see it kinda eerie with her voice maybe. Sometimes covers don't work out.
