I think if we start allowing this then it will pretty much be an open field day for even more wrongful convictions than we already have.

And while I don't think that's legal, it still happens, guaranteed, like in this case. People rarely care about other people when their job/livelihood/pride is on the line.

This is already allowed. The defense counsel has a job to do, too. Not all evidence offered by the prosecutor is or should be admitted. If someone committed a murder, and the prosecution has evidence that they did it, but can pin the exact time and location of the murder, should it matter, even when it's not as tantamount to the case?

Assuming you meant "can't" for the bold, it depends what evidence they have. If it's DNA or video or something solid, then sure, convict them. But I think the issue with this case is all evidence is just one dude's dubious, always changing testimony, and a bunch of random people saying things that can be easily molded to fit whatever you want the narrative to say.

I'm pretty sure everyone in this thread who think he did it says so because we have no idea who else could have, and we believe Jay to a degree, in the sense that he was involved. None of us have any REAL solid reason to be so confident, though. Is that enough to convict? I dunno.

EDIT: But also, what I was referring to in go cubs' post is flat out lying about the case. I highly doubt you're SUPPOSED to do that from a legal standpoint, but I suppose it's "allowed."

I agree. Also, he got off with 18 months of probation, which seems incredibly light since he admitted to being as involved as he was. As far as people affected by the Serial podcast - Jay has the most to lose.

While I voted yes, I think there was enough to establish reasonable doubt. All they had was circumstantial testimony and evidence. I'm only on season 10. I'm guessing this never actually gets solved.

A couple of other things that bother me about this. At the very beginning, Jay and Adnan are described as acquaintences, not friends. Even, in a recorded call, Adnon admits to this. However, a few episodes later, this track guy named Will said that it wasn't unusal for Jay to pick him up from track, so couldn't remember if he did on the 13th. I don't know many kids who let acquaintences routinely borrow their car.

I also can't seem to shake that whole bit where Adnon got a gift for Stephanie's birthday and then went to make sure that Jay did for her as well. Again, that's not something you worry about with a mere acquaintence. In addition, Adnan states that he never even thought that Jay may be a little jealous of him and Stephanie being so close. Really? As a 16/17 year old boy, it NEVER occurred to you that Jay may not like you being so chummy with this allegedly hot chick? Come on. No way that's true.

I can't imagine Jay isn't more involved than he's implicated himself. I also can't believe he didn't receive some jail time. Also, not really a point of the story but, why did Stephanie come to Jay's sentencing? I'd have thought by that time she would have completely separated herself from that guy. I mean, someone shows you a body of a teenage girl and you don't call the cops and this girl still wants anything to do with him? How could anyone ever feel safe around a person like Jay?

Lastly, how could you not be furious if someone lied and put you in prison for the rest of your life at the age of 18? The whole "nice guy" act seems just that.

There's no way Adnan was that unlucky to lend his car and cell phone to the guy who decides to incriminate him on the day Hae dies. One of the researchers mentioned this and I agree. I do think the evidence was light, but dude's guilty as hell.

Adnan has been granted an appeal. His case will be heard again this June.

either way, I think it's a little weird if he somehow gets out of jail. that would be a killer on the loose (and not that he would ever kill again after everything he's been through, but still)

hey, it's up to the State to collect evidence and make a case

they did a pretty bad job the first time around but got bailed out by a terrible defense attorney

i'll be following this closely, it's super interesting

Yeah, that is kind of scary because, despite the lack of physical evidence, there's no way he didn't do this.

The unlucky coincidences for this guy just keep stacking up. While I agree, in a sense, with how the podcast started out in terms of “it’s difficult to remember exactly what you were doing 6 weeks ago”. It’s unlikely that you’d forget on a day when you let someone else from your school borrow your car and someone from your school goes missing. Even if you did absolutely nothing wrong, wouldn’t you want to account for where you, your phone and your car was that day? According to what we’re told later in the podcast, the new boyfriend certainly seemed to pick up on the fact that he’d be looked at. A recent ex wouldn’t do the same thing? And, even if you didn't on that Wednesday, by the time Monday rolled around and she never surfaced didn't cause any reflection? That's crazy.

Then there’s the whole part of the story where she asks if she thinks Jay set him up or was mad about his relationship with Stephanie. This is another time where he just played dumb. Really? 17-18 year old kids and you’re hanging out a lot around his girlfriend and you never even thought that he may not particularly like it? I’m not saying that Jay did or didn’t but to say that it never crossed your mind seems disingenuous. For a smart guy he happens to be really dumb when it’s convenient.

There’s no doubt that Jay knows more. The timeline he laid out and the cell tower pings don’t align with where he said he was that entire time. I’m fairly convinced he helped bury the body and is afraid that level of help would have landed him in jail as an accomplice.

Then there’s that phone call to the girl that only Adnan knew. He said that maybe it was a butt dial by Jay, who had his phone. I mean, that’s just more unlucky stuff. The guy who you don’t know that well has your car and cell phone? While that’s happening, you’re at track and your ex-girlfriend goes missing?

All of this happens and you don’t really remember the day or find anything unusual? All of these coincidences happen and the guy, who was not really a friend, fingers you for murder essentially single handedly putting you in prison and you’re not angry with the guy.

You let this guy borrow your cell phone and car. You supposedly knew or cared enough about him to tell him to get his GF a birthday gift. He returns those kindnesses by sending you to prison for life and you’re not mad or bitter at the guy? Yeah, ok.
