biggest band in the world long before he died

We probably still would have gotten them, though. Nirvana broke up before Kurt killed himself (although they probably would have gotten back together right after Kurt cleaned himself up), and Kurt apparently hated working with Dave anyway, so upon reforming they very may well have gone with another drummer and Dave could have made his further millions with that other band.
all of this is spot on. however, kurt had literally no chance of cleaning up from what i've absorbed.

if he were to get clean however, i feel really confident he would have continued to write phenomenal songs. few artists in the history of music have had such an impeccable ability to create melodies the way he did. lyrically, it might have gotten worse because he was so used to creating lyrics from the mental hell he was in.

    Me too.

I was 11 at the time, was just getting into music, and was obsessed with Nirvana. There used to be a ticket broker in a mall in NJ I'd go to on occasion, and walking by one day it said "Nirvana - Sony Studios." We asked about it and they said it was for an acoustic performance for MTV and that tickets were $300 a piece. My mom told me that if I wanted that for my birthday (it was taping a few days after I turned 12) that could be my only present. I decided to wait and never saw Nirvana.

I think both of those are two of the greatest live performances of all time.

"Where did you sleep last night?" gets me choked up every. damn. time.

Someone posted a good write up of Nirvana's performance in this thread, read that and you'll see why it is considered so great.
