Re: Official Grateful Dead Thread

I like what I've heard so far by the Dead. Will someone point out "required listening" for me?

You guys have any recommendations on good 1989 shows (whether official releases or Archive stuff, doesn't matter)?

Yeah I was just too lazy to rake through the thread specifically for some 1989 recommendations.

I have plenty of stuff from 69-85.

    I found a good show though: 7/7/89

I think the younger people that are coming into the scene on the likes of Bisco and Umphrey's really lose track of what got 'em there. I was always big on DMB, but thru that I found several other bands and genres. I respect a lot of music, but I study a lot of music too. It seems they think Jake Cinninger just woke up and knew how to melt faces

There are a ton of great official releases from 1989-early 1990 (Crimson, White & Indigo; Formerly the Warlocks, Terrapin Station Ltd., Dozin' at the Knick, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) because they were traveling with a mobile recording truck to all of their shows.

1989 was pretty hot, it's a shame Brent died the next year.

there is a dead head night where the electric waste band plays in my hometown every week. My friends are convinced I will find my next boyfriend there. I never thought of myself as a full blown hippie -- just a lil bit of hippie. I guess to others I'm right up there with the best of them..

"A Long Strange Trip" by Dennis McNally? It's like about 650 pages. I picked this up at a thrift store over the summer for a buck, but still havent had a chance to read it. I plan on starting over winter break. Apparently its the Dead book.

Well Macnally was commissioned by the band to write the definitive biography of them (or something like that).

Phil's book is more centered around his thoughts and feelings (obviously), with some really cool anecdotes and such.
