I have expressed the same feelings all week.
Jeff Gordon is the first sports star I watched the entire career of.
My parents have been true fans since day one. I still remember watching his first race in Atlanta 1992. I was a huge Petty fan (at 7 years old). My parents went for the young gun in the #24. We have watched his career play out ever since. I was at all of his Daytona 500 wins. We went to the Waldorf Hotel in NY for the awards for all 4 of his championship titles. Growing up racing at Wall Speedway in NJ, we knew Ray Evernham a little. As a result, I had the luck to meet Jeff Gordon on many occasions in NY.
Obviously I was pulling for the #24 big time yesterday. I can't help but feeling a little let down that it didn't work out. However, I think that feeling is more about being sad that the #24 won't have Gordon behind the wheel next year. Next year I will go to race and for the first time since the 1992 Daytona 500 (won by Davy Allison), it won't include Jeff Gordon. Going to be a weird feeling.
Thank you Jeff Gordon for an amazing career!
