Carter Beauford

This is a general place where we can talk Carter. Please post any questions, info, equipment list, pics, vids, etc. that you may have to share with the other ANTS. Maybe for once we can figure out what Carters "true" drum set currently consist of, (not an outdated equipment list from the net).

Is there anybody else that can't wait to get their hands on a Carter Beauford Signature Snare from Yamaha? I have been waiting since summer NAMM 08'!!

I know it's been discussed as being "removed" from the kit, but (and this if for you Beauford Buddy), the A Custom EFX has been in and out on shows this summer. Someone said it was removed, but I remember seeing it in Camden setup.

BTW, BeaufordBuddy's website is the definitive collection of Carter equipment.

I think I saw one on the Piedmont video...but I only got a quick look cause I don't own the DVD.

I know I've seen it this summer. It's a floating floor tom I believe.

Is this the one with the holes cut in it? I saw that he had that cymbal as part of the setup in Charlotte.

Yeah, the one at Carter's 7 o'clock-ish position. It's been in and out at shows I've been to this tour.

I was hoping all this thread said was, is amazing. But, yeah Carter is what got me serious about playing the drums and I began experimenting with different set ups after I watched the Listener Supported DVD. I'll never forget that feeling after watching him play for the first time.

Have you seen the instructional vids I think its called "Under The Table And Drumming"? It shows LOTS of the nasty foot work on those DW pedals (especially #41). I highly recommend it to anybody thats trying to learn from Carter, or that just want to see the method behind the madness. Watch this video its AWESOME!!!!

Me too man I the first time I saw him play I was about 12 from then on I just tried all kinds of differnet mixes and setup's. I think the hardest thing for me to understand is the "open stance" he takes when playing, leading with the left hand on the hi-hats and leading with the right foot on the bass drum. What kind of setup are you using... I sure hope its Yamaha

Yeah, I have his Under The Table And Drumming DVD. It's awesome. I learned a little but that stuff is so ridiculous that he does that I sit and watch in more awe than I do to take the time and learn it.

The left hand lead is the first thing I was able to pick up from him and I use that predominately now. I never use the cross sticking method at all. I still know how because that's how I taught myself first, but when I open it up it just frees up my right arm to add little touches while keeping a nice rhythm with the ride or hats.

Yeah, I've been playing a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage for about 5 or 6 years. It's just a 5 piece with 6 cymbals, all Zildjian of course. What about you?

I'm a switch hitter right now. When the new kit comes in, then I'll be able to really exploit switching leads. I'll be dropping my hats to a lower level (ala Simon Phillips), and adding a set of remotes on my right side, so I'll have hats on both sides and can do what I like and interplay between them. Also will be adding the left hand ride, as I find I groove out better with left hand ride lead.

BTW, new kit is Tama Starclassic Bubingas in Ultraviolet Sparkle... should be in this week.

I have the Yamaha Recording Customs w Iron Cobra hardware, and Zildijian cymbals, they are the best sounding drums I have ever played. How long did it take you to get comfortable playing "open"? (I have practiced this for YEARS and im sill not very fluid....) Its good to have another Yamaha drummer in the forum

The ride on the left really makes things interesting, I like it much better than on the right side. Also, when you set your right side remote hats up, are you planning on using the pedal on your right foot or left foot?

Right foot. Double kick pedal so I'll have access to play either side as I like.

I used to play Yammies, then I realized a chunk of what you pay is for the name. They had a nice sound, but Tama was easier to get what I wanted... which are the "hyperdrive" toms.

    New kit is as follows...
    6.5"x10"
    7"x12"
    8"x14" Mounted toms
    16"x14" Floor Tom
    16"x22" Kick

I, too, rock Zildjian cymbals, except for a Sabian Paragon Splash... I really love that cymbal. And some Wuhans.

Never cracked a cymbal. Hell, I've used the same pair of sticks for over a year. It's all in how you approach the drum.

Wow I WISH I could have a pair of sticks last half that long!! I think it was 2006 in Charlotte, NC. On the very first stroke of the snare Carter broke right through it. He was nailing that thing!

I got a problem when I go to veiw pics under tour central the thumbnail looks fine and then the larger picture that shows up is very dark looking... Whats going on with that?

I dunno, I go through a pair of sticks after about 2 shows. That's about 55-60 songs. I dunno how you make em last much longer than that...I'm not a big hitter either.

Damn, Yamaha Recording Customs? Those come at a pretty penny. But, yeah man I bet they sound fantastic! It really didn't take too long for me to be comfortable playing open handed. I'd say a few months, maybe 3-5. I don't know why I caught on so quick, but I just did. Well, I take that back, there might be a little reason. I'm a little ambidextrious anyway so that just aided to it. Keep at it man you'll get it!

Yeah, I've heard, well...I've read things about it. I don't know how I feel about it though. I'd much rather have a signature snare from him around the 2000-2003 era because his snare had such a better sound during that time. In my opinion. Hell, in 2004 his snare was great. It doesn't sound bad now, I just prefer the earlier sound he had. I'd also love for him to release that Chinese Wedding Bell he has. Man, I'd love one of those.

It kinda sucks because I'm at college and couldn't bring my drums with me so I don't get to play them that often. I haven't added anything in a VERY long time. Last thing I bought was my Mapex Black Panther snare and man...that thing sounds good.

It's about being loose and letting the stick do all the work. Learned it from drum corps and ancient rudimental drumming. Hell, in the drum corps I'm in, I tape my sticks at the start of the season in November and then spruce them up about this time of year from the rim shots. Some guys tear through sticks. I barely make it through tape.

I agree with that although marching sticks and kevlar heads do make a HUGE difference in the amount of bounce you can get with out pushing too hard.

It's not the sticks, it's the nearly bulletproof head material used on marching snares. However, in ancient rudimental drumming, I'm playing on calfskin heads which have little rebound. So they're two completely different idioms, and I think that's really helped my drumming.

Bounce, also, should be used as a tool, not a dependency. The stick wants to bounce, so learn to use it. Work with the bounce as part of your playing and you, too, shall see the ways of stick saving :-p

I have Carter's "old" kit exactly modeled. Only my drums are Pearl Sessions instead of Yamaha Recording Customs.

So, the past few shows I've noticed Carter has been using his old rack. The Rothbury AND the Hershey shows he used this old rack instead of the new one. He also didn't have the EFX Crash during either of these shows.

He's now using an 18" Oriental China Trash on top of an 18" Oriental Classic China as his stack.

I wish his signature snare would hurry up and come out. They've been working on it for about 3 years now. Last I heard, Carter was deciding on a color, either white or yellow. Yellow modeled after his drumming idol, Dennis Chambers.

Oh, and the tom to the left of Carter is a 13x11.

I'm ready to see him this summer on the smaller kit. I think the reason he took all of his splashes out was for the electric guitar burying them. You could barely hear the Trashformer, and the 8/10" Splash stack, so that may be a reason he took them out. Or, he could have just wanted a stripped down kit for once. Who knows!

I hope the bolded is the reason.

I hope the italicized and underlined is NOT the reason.

What makes you think that Chambers is Carters Idol? I think Carter B is older than Dennis... Anyway thanks for the info on the rack Im going to check the picks out now! Wonder why he didnt use the hex rack (new rack) I have heard that the band has a "B Setup" witch is like identical setup that they would normally use. This is done so if the band is for ex) in Flordia and the next day has a show at the George the trucks cant possibly make it in time. So, they fly the "B setup" to it location and meet up with the "A setup" later. Maybe the "old rack" was part of the B setup...
