yea the decision by Dave to abandon Lillywhite (and the band, really) and "The Summer So Far" ... to fly to California and do an album with Glen Ballard in 9 days and then come back and hand sheet music to the band..... that was most certainly a fork in the road that they have never really recovered from.
Dave was depressed. But Flohr and Capshaw should have drilled into him to embrace it and focus those feelings into the music. The Lillywhite Sessions captured that and would have been even better in the finished product if they just stayed on it. It would have bested BTCS, possibly by a sizable margin.
Went to two shows that summer. I remember an edginess to the band. A moodiness that kind of flowed over the crowds. The angst built up in the studio was exploding onstage into some deeply emotional and focused performances.
