Too mellow? Have you listened to this song?

seeing that open last year was unreal. It may not happen near as often but this band still throws surprises here and there and this one was great.

I can enjoy songs like that for the uniqueness -- knowing that Loving Wings, #27, or Spaceman don't normally open shows would make it enjoyable for the DMB nerd in me. But as for a hyped concert going experience, the slow opening notes of #27 or the mellow kick of Spaceman are undeniably underwhelming compared to songs like DDTW, Billies, Two Step, Rapunzel, and more.

how so? because they can't "appreciate" a song without "the energy"?

some songs just fall flat, especially as openers, and the band (Dave) should realize when that happens. hell, listen to the crowd at the start of #27 in that video. its the first song of the electric set and you can literally count the people who cheered. then you listen to a song like Dancing Nancies or Seek Up and the crowd goes crazy after the first 4 notes.

and a lot of times, when they play a snoozer opening song, a high energy song is right behind it. like the dallas show last year where this #27 opened, Shake Me was the next song. when A Dream So Real opened a few shows back in 2007, Two Step, Seek Up, Pig, or Rapunzel was right behind it. why not just open with those songs and have ADSR 2nd? (or better yet just not play ADSR because the song was terrible)

#27 is a decent opener but overall a good song. Would take Hello Again a million times over though...

Loved ADSR, always have. 10/2/07 is the definitive version in my mind, with 6/21/08 being a close 2nd. I won't say it doesn't kill the energy at a concert, but it's a beautiful song. I'd take it any day over equally slow songs like If Only or You & Me.

Seek Up is an UNREAL opener. SPAC a couple years ago ('13) was the cats meow

DDTW doesn't really open shows that much these days. I still have never seen it open a show I've been at. Haha

Bartender has opened my last 3 shows in a row! 2 acoustic openers in 2014, and one electric in 2009.

What I don't like is when they open mellow in the 2 set format. After 8 acoustic songs last year, I wanted the electric set to open HARD. Minarets was great in that slot in 2014. Spaceman at Camden, however, not so much

At a regular show, I wouldn't hate Spaceman as an opener. If that makes sense?
    Very valid point. I agree.

It's actually been since 9/30/09 that it opened a show in the States. The few times it's opened since then have all been international shows.

Yeah, I don't really count the acoustic ones. While I like Bartender acoustic, it's way better electric. Unless they end up playing it full band acoustic, not sure I've heard it if they did last year(?).

The longer songs, like Seek Up and Dreaming Tree mentioned earlier, Bartender, or even Jimi Thing, are cool because the solos are like musician introductions. #41 is one of the best openers I've seen because of that, and because the "yea's" are that much louder.

I remember when people were complaining about it always being DDTW, OSW or Rapunzel. Oh my god so many people complaining about OSW.

Also, FWIW, I think OSW is one of the absolute best openers the band has. That song IS summer to me. That opening intro. Dave grinning weirdly at an enormous crowd grooving with him. I love OSW opening.

i heard ADSR once at the izod 07 show. it bored the crowd to death. my mom was with me for her first DMB show and never heard the song or heard me say anything about it. after it ended she asked if everybody was clapping because it was finally over.

i believe bartender was only played D+T in the acoustic set. they didn't seem to change up the personnel on a song over the course of the tour.

but it was played all 17 times in the acoustic set and its one of dave's go-to acoustic openers. the only times it wasn't opening the set, it was played 2nd, after a dave solo opener.

That's why N3 of the Chicago Caravan was so awesome...or one of the reasons. A great set helped things tremendously. A few clunkers here and there but overall, a good show. I love OSW opening a show.
