PM John Key secured filming in NZ with "tense" negotiations with New Line and Warner Bros. execs. Had to change some labor laws to do it, but they got it done. Im happy with this outcome.

Behind the scenes of the making of the hobbit. A must watch if you're interested in the movie, or really movie-making at all. I cannot wait for these films to come out, and it's amazing to see that it's actually happening after such a long wait.

So first of all, Legolas (Orlando Bloom) is the latest of the LOTR cast to be making any kind of even small appearance in one or both of these movies, but the titles and release dates have also been made official (though long rumored).

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on 12.14.12 and The Hobbit: There And Back Again on 12.13.13.

I dont understand why it needs to be two movies. They can probably do this justice with one film damnit.

Some more casting news official now, and for a pretty big role. The voice for Smaug the dragon will be done by Benedict Cumberbatch, he currently being the new Holmes in Steven Moffat's Sherlock BBC series. So apparently this had been rumored for awhile now, but the very first I'm ever hearing of it and it's when it's definite. Sweet. I know at least a long time ago there was some speculation of maybe Christopher Lee doing the voice, and sure that would be a good fit, but I love this casting, Cumberpatch has a pretty unique voice.

But he'll also be playing the Necromancer. Now, I've still never read any of the Tolkien novels, I just have a general familiarity with that word as being another key element elsewhere in the overall story/history of Middle Earth, thanks to it being talked about here and there throughout all of the documentaries on the Rings DVDs.

Interesting. The Necromancer turns out to be Sauron, but he's only mentioned in passing in the book, someone Gandalf has to go run off and deal with as the dwarves and Bilbo enter the forest of Mirkwood.

My thought exactly, The Necromancer didn't even have any large role in "The Hobbit" except that they had to go around some place and had to pass through the Mirkwood to avoid him. That's about it. Weird that he has a voice.

Actually by the article I read, he's going to have more than that. Because they were talking about how Cumberpatch would obviously only be doing the voice of the CGI Smaug (well along with facial mo-cap) but that for the second role as the Necromancer it would be more of a proper physical role for him.

Again without having read any of The Hobbit yet myself, but it really seems like Jackson's taking this opportunity to REALLY flesh out the rest of the world of Middle Earth as much as he can, to tell the entire proper story of The Hobbit and use all of this other side material and color filling in the background (& I guess some fore) bumping it up against LOTR to make a truly all encompassing film version of Tolkien's original book vision.

damn it's weird, this site apparently will just not let you type in a bunch of consecutive capital letters and followed immediately by punctuation. I typed this in with all caps and exclamation marks with no gaps and it came out like that.

Honestly, while I'm very glad I read the Silmarillion, and while I think it is an amazing work of art, as soon as I finished the last sentence I collapsed onto the book and fell asleep for twelve hours. No kidding. It wasn't bad - just exhausting.

That's a good way to describe Silmarillion. It's wonderful and fascinating, but it sure is dense.

But this is pretty cool, just read from PJ's posting update on the facebook page, Evangeline Lilly (aka Kate from Lost) is involved! All it says is the Woodland Elf named Tauriel. The name means "daughter of Mirkwood", but he says that's all the description he'll give for now (but pointing out definitely no romance connection with Legolas).

I'm pretty sure this is the first major thing for her since the end of Lost.
