Fantasy Football 2014: Talk, Advice, & Start 'em, Sit 'em

It's mid June, time to start getting serious. I've got about 10 leagues locked up now. And I'll be in Vegas over Labor Day weekend so I'm thinking about drafting a high stakes team while I'm there.

Current top 10 ADP:

1. LeSean McCoy
2. Jamaal Charles
3. Calvin Johnson
4. Adrian Peterson
5. Demaryius Thomas
6. Eddie Lacy
7. Matt Forte
8. Jimmy Graham
9. A.J. Green
10. Dez Bryant

5 rbs, 4 wrs, and a te. I'm not sure about Lacy that high. I think I'd prefer a top wr over him in the 1st.

RB's are pretty much a crap chute after the top 5. Really hope I have an early pick in round 1 this year more than previous years.. Makes draft strategy much simpler. Take an elite RB in first and still have at least one of the top WR's available in late round 2/early round 3.

Can't believe I took CJ Spiller over every person on that list not named Adrian Peterson last year. Fuck that guy.

Likewise. I don't blame Spiller as much as I do Doug Moron. Could be a good value pick this year though.

I'm not touching that guy for anything more than a flex option. Fool me once...

I know I bitched incessantly about this weekly in last year's thread, but if you replaced Spiller's weekly numbers with Jamaal Charles' (who I was talked out of picking) I would have won 3 more games. Instead I missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker.

I had Charles fall to me with the 11th pick, and I wasn't thrilled in taking him.

Shouldn't this thread be used to talk about sleepers at this point?

I took spiller last year. He never played past week 2. Still somehow won the league

Crazy to think I'll be drafting my team about 2 months from now

I have a keeper dilemma, would appreciate some input

Basic keeper rule, you keep 1 player from your team last year and you lose whatever round he was originally drafted in. In our league, we do not know draft order until AFTER your keeper is decided. Options below

    12 teams. Ppr league

    Peyton Manning (Round 1)
    Zac Stacy (Round 16)
    Julius Thomas (round 14)

I kind of just want to play it safe and keep Peyton with my first rounder. This way I pretty much know I won't have a first round bust. On the other hand, I feel like I can keep Julius Thomas and plan on taking Peyton regardless of what pick I have in first round. And if I don't get Peyton I go after one of the other elite QBs like Rodgers or Brees. Zac Stacy is great value at 16 but I judge don't buy his talent. Never really did

I just loved having Peyton last year. It was great going into every week knowing I was pretty much guaranteed Peyton would put up more (sometimes a lot more) points than my opponents qb

Love Eddie lacy. Could be a top 3 back. Remember he did what he did with 7 weeks of awful Matt Flynn.

Love Jimmie think he is a game changer week to week. When you can consistently out score your opponent by 8-15 every week that is amazing

    Beadt mode scares me.

Not even ready to go here yet into football. Drafted Josh Gordon late in 3 leagues last year and had planned on keeping him in all 3, putting me in a great position at WR. Now I'm screwed and losing that awesome keeper value.

I won't be touching Lynch or Arian Foster this year unless they drop to me.

I think foster could have good value , assuming he drops to late 2nd or early 3rd. Though if he sounds healthy and running good in camp, he might vault back to the late 1st. I agree on Lynch.

I'd strongly consider Stacy or Thomas. The value is incredible. Thomas would lock up your TE spot so you'd have 13 rounds to stock up on rbs and wrs and 1 qb. QB is the position I'm not sure yet what to do with. You could be the last person in a 12 team league to take a qb and you'd be ok. Last year I played matchups week to week in a bunch of my leagues and did well. This year I really like Luck, Stafford and Ryan and might be willing to grab one of them if the round value isn't too bad. But I could see playing matchups again.

if you're putting a bunch of cash on this stuff, you can't wait until August to start looking at it. Dynasty drafts start right after the NFL draft. Draft-n-Go leagues are going on weekly right now. I take 2 months off after the Super Bowl and then get right back into it. So much information out there to digest.

I'd keep Thomas and Stacy without thinking twice.

As of right now my QB plan is to pair Cutler with either Newton, RG3 or Kap.

In my 14 team league, my strategy has always been one of the last 2 or 3 to get a QB (usually round 6 or 7), but get another within a few rounds. Seems to have worked out well with Tony Romo last year.

Ive had Romo on a few of my teams for the past couple years. He's cheap and he gets you what you need. Well, except Championship week of 2011 when I needed 9 points and he put up a goose egg because he got hurt on the opening series.

Romo could be a steal this year. New O-coordinator that likes to throw the ball and potentially a historically bad defense... I'll be targeting him.

you can get away with it playing in regular family/friend leagues. but you can't if you're playing in the big national leagues. there is luck involved, but the research and statistical models are really getting in depth. People are going through 20+ years of fantasy stats and breaking down players by size, weight, age, and many other factors to try to project future performances and players.

There is more straight up dumb luck involved in FF then there is statistical trends and all that stuff. I get wanting to be ahead of the curve when it comes to possible sleepers, who's trending up/down, boom/busts; but killing yourself with stat analysis on how predictable it is some guy throws a pick 6, a runner slips from a tackle and runs off a 90 yard TD, a player suffers a freak injury or a defender falls down covering a WR, that's all kinda crazy to me.

Is this research done by the same people who predict lottery numbers? Many of us like fantasy football, and spend a lot of time / money on it - but luck (as in who stays healthy, and who gets hot/cold during the FF playoffs) are more important than any of that.

no, these guys do fantasy football full time. as high stakes players and writers. this information is mostly to help decide between guys in the drafting process. a lot of it for dynasty league drafts, looking at the young guys and how they might turn out.
there is a lot of luck involved. it's entirely possible someone can show up hungover at the draft with an outdated magazine and win with dumb luck against friends. but some of the best players consistantly win. so there is a process behind it.
not sure if any of you do daily fantasy, but there is a shitload of money out there, prizes in the millions now for those championships. and the top players are almost always in the running. that's not all luck.
