    It's that time of year!

So, with that, I have used H&R Block's online form for years, and when entering my info this time around, it wants to count my HSA contribution as income, even though it's going in on my W-2 under box W. Because of this, it says I owe a shitload more than is correct, and that I can't file without buying the deluxe edition, because I have self-employment income (which I don't). Can anyone explain why it's thinking that?

Did you complately go thru every section of your tax return and finish? In my experience with TurboTax, it always did that on the front end when entering the HSA info, but then later on towards the end it would go through another section and voila it would reset everything back into the black.

Anyone trying Credit Karma this year? They're saying state and federal totally free, no exceptions.

Pretty sure I always end up paying some amount to Turbotax.

I get to a point where it says I need to purchase the Deluxe edition to finish my return, so I don't select that option. I ran my info through Turbo Tax, and that comes out to the right amount that I owe, so not sure what HR's problem is.

I'm honestly not sure because i've never used turbo tax or any of those programs. I just know that he doesn't charge me to do it, where as any other CPA would charge me.

On a part-time job two years ago, I got like $3,000 back. I was hella surprised, but he's handled my family's returns for as long as I can remember, so we've never done the do-it yourself programs

Message I get: "Since you contributed to a Health Savings Account (HSA), you'll need to use H&R Block Deluxe to prepare this year's taxes."

I re-entered everything, it now comes out to the correct amount that I owe, but it still wants me to file with the $34.99 Deluxe edition because of the HSA questionnaire. Dumb.

Last year was my first year in many years that I ended up using the standard deduction. It looks like I'm headed that way again this year. Just don't see a way to itemize enough to get me past $12,600.

Re: I just did my taxes

If Trump's tax plan goes in for 2017, I won't be able to itemize after this year. His new standard deduction amount, and the elimination of the personal exemption amount, makes itemizing the less of the two amounts for me.

Edit: This will increase my taxable income ~$3k.

Research has suggested that this is the case for many (most?) of the people who itemize......

Yeah, I mean a lot of it is my own doing. Aggressive principal payments have left me with not a lot of mortgage interest to deduct. I no longer have student loan debt, no major medical expenses (thankfully), etc. Even with 2 kids and maxing out the dependent care credit, I still end up a little short of $12,600. Plus, I live in a state without an income tax. I could claim more charitable donations I guess, but it wouldn't push me far enough over the standard deduction to matter much.

Claiming the standard deduction makes tax time less stressful at least.

A computer can't really ask you the questions to tailor your return to your unique situation.

If you've got one W2 with a standard deduction, fine.

If you're itemizing with three w2's, a 1099 and five other weird number forms.... get a CPA.

I'm not complaining about that one, trust me. Just examples of things I used to itemize to reduce my tax burden that aren't available to me anymore.

My wife and I had about 60k in student loan debt after we left college...glad to finally get rid of those payments after 13 years.

I paid my wife's $20k off the Monday after the wedding. She's now my ex-wife. So, that's a mistake that you can make; I have since learned.

I don't understand taxes at all. This is the first year I owe and they want $462 federal and $200+ for state.

Are you using software or doing it by hand?

Either way, if something changes like this, you gotta go line by line and compare years to find either what changed or a mistake..

Either way, if something changes like this, you gotta go line by line and compare years to find either what changed or a mistake..
This is good advice. Try to pinpoint the difference by looking at your prior year tax return.

If you are using a software that just asked you questions, you can still look at the finished prior year return vs this year page by page and see if there is a number that was positive last year and negative this year or vice versa, or if there is a new tax form schedule.
