Re: Few songs of "Away fom the world" on this 2016

If Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King was the very first DMB album I would have listened to, I would be intrigued to listen to another album in the band's catalogue. I know I wouldn't do the same if AFTW was my very first DMB listening experience.

BW is a big, in your face album with some catchy songs.

AFTW is best described as "meek". Theres a couple gems on there, but none any new fan would appreciate, and only a couple that hardcore fans do.

I don't think this is fair to say. I think it's fair to assert that this is your opinion, however I don't believe that's a universal opinion. I like it, I don't find it forgettable, and I like it for more reasons than the fact that Lillywhite produced it. I think it's a great sounding album with solid songs.

It was my wife's first DMB album and she fell in love with the band after hearing that album.

AFTW has had no lasting power within this fanbase, both casually and to the die-hards. BW is not enjoyed bc of such heavy play since its release, some people also feel they are inferior songs. BW has better songs, IMO, songs that can breathe a lot more live. AFTW sounds like DMB, sure, but look who was at the helm of that production. Give Cavallo a shot with DMB without influence from Roi's death, and I think that'd be a good representation of what DMB has left in the tank. AFTW just feels like the 2016 tour, the band going through the motions.

When AFTW came out, I was on a break from the band enough to be surprised that a new DMB album showed up in the iTunes store. I downloaded it that day, played some of it, and forgot about it for a while. It was always an album that I meant to come around on, give more time to, but ultimately never felt inspired to do so. And it did nothing to wake me up into my love for the band again at that time.

Big Whiskey was brilliant when it came out, and it's still strong today. Just because you've been dozens of shows where they played Seven, Squirm or Shake Me doesn't diminish the impact that the studio album had. SMLAM was the best opener this side of BOWA that we could have hoped for in 2009. Even the beloved Broken Things, which I DO enjoy, is a sleeper by comparison.

Substitute nearly every BW song with AFTW song at a live show, and i'd take it

Agreed. It was SL squeezing the last few drops out of Dave, and we got a couple solid songs out of it, the rest just seems like its kinda just there. Theres no passion in those songs.

I would bet they didnt have much fun working on that album either.

a blanket, unsubstantiated statement. where do you pull this crap out of?

i've been going to DMB shows since the 90's (i suppose i'm a "diehard" in your book). since its release, i listen to AFTW more than any other DMB album. it has not grown old at all. it is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, every time.

now don't get me wrong, i'm itching for a new album (it's been over 4 years, after all), but that doesn't mean AFTW doesn't have legs.

try speaking for yourself from now on. :thumbs

I was VERY excited when I heard DMB was working with SL again, most here were. I was chomping at the bit to hear it. I really liked Gaucho (outside of the kids singing) when I first heard it. But now that song is nothing to me. I listened to AFTW alot when it came out, and enjoyed parts of it, but like you said, nothing ever really came around for me on it, most of it went the opposite way, in fact.

I mean, Id agree with your statement for the most part outside of taking like Dive In over Rooftop live.

But thats only because of how much Ive seen all the BW songs. Doesnt mean I think AFTW is a better album though.

BW and AFTW should have never been two separate albums. It should have been just one and just trim the fat.

    1) Grux
    2) Broken Things
    3) Lying in the Hands of God
    4) Belly Belly Nice
    5) Mercy
    6) Rooftop
    7) Sweet
    8) Snow Outside
    9) Drunken Soldier
    10) Baby Blue
    11) Squirm
    12) Shotgun

idk, perusing the board seems to be a good assessment that it's not listened to or discussed often. also, fans seem to snoozefest during any AFTW songs, even rooftop

This 100 percent. The songs I'd like to be in constant rotation off of AFTW are:

    Broken Things
    Belly Belly Nice
    The Riff
    Snow Outside
    Drunken Soldier

I like both albums a lot. I think BW is a better rock album. More in your face, plenty of energy, and generally catchy. I think AFTW is a more well written album. Subtler and probably less easy to translate live.
Personally I like AFTW more. BW feels like it was purposely being written as a powerful rock album. Dave plays a lot of power chords rather than Dave chords and the lyric and melody patterns are more generic (not a bad thing). Really fun to hear.
AWFW feels more inspired and unique. I can see why this album is more polarizing but I really prefer it. Gaucho and some songs are pretty generic but a lot of the album seems more special.
Like I said I really do enjoy both, however.

Agreed with the points above about BW being a more memorable album. AFTW just never really clicked with me. There's a few songs on there that I like, but nothing I love. And I really don't care for much of it live... at all. I'd take Seven/Shake Me over belly jelly and squirm over rooftop every single time. I don't really like seven or shake me all that much, but immensely better than the AFTW equivalent.

Broken things and the riff would be fun to hear live.

I wonder what Cavallo would have done with the AFTW material. Honestly, I don't think Lillywhite did the band any favors. It had been over a decade since they ended their great run with him as a producer. They're a different band today, I'm sure Steve's a different guy.

There are trademark subtleties in Lillywhite's production on AFTW, but I wonder if Cavallo could have focused the band more like he did with BW.

Back to topic, have we thought about the concept that since the band is taking a hiatus, more casual fans may have been drawn to the 2016 tour, thus playing more catalog staples? Maybe AFTW hasn't been out long enough to market that crowd...

I can't for the life of me remember what The Riff sounds like. Totally forgettable song on a mostly forgettable album.

The Riff sounds like a song that they asked Tim to write on electric and they just layered on top of what he did.

Its an okay song at very best. But still totally forgettable, and whats sad is its still like the 4th best song on that album

BW is a better album. AFTW is just forgettable with a couple gems that are vastly better than anything on BW (Snow outside, Broken things)
    I agree completely

AFTW is so flat. Sweet, Mercy, Gaucho, Belly Full, Rooftop, If Only, The Riff, Belly Belly Nice...just average, unmemorable, boring studio tracks....At least the studio versions of SMLAM and Seven kick ass

I get what you're doing here but you can't just cut out the best studio cut they did in a decade (Shake Me), and then throw on a song that wasn't even on either of those albums (Shotgun). You broke your own rule lol

I really like AFTW. For some reason I HATE Gaucho and don't really like The Riff, but the rest of the album is solid.

Would love if the band started playing Broken Things at some point, but I don't see it happening.

AFTW was never given the same chance to grow in concert as BW.
