Re: CD Release: Sweet Briar Dell

Super pumped for this. I didn't realize Dave ever played any solo shows as lengthy as this one.

Question for you Doby: with this being just a Dave solo recording, how much better could the flac files sound than the MP3? I really want this one to sound as good and as clean as possible.

I think that all depends on listening environment and equipment. Someone listening in the car on the go, or while working out, etc., not really conducive to critical listening. On a good system when you're sitting there just listening, you may find the flacs have a more natural high end about them.

Today's mp3 encoders are very good, I just prefer trying to get as close to the original master file as possible and in this case that's likely either the CD or the flacs. That way I can make mp3s for the car if I want to from the flacs and use the flacs for in house listening. For $2 it's a no brainer for me.

I was in Best Buy last year and was trying to find out if they had something by DMB there (I forget what, maybe Alpine CD/DVD) but couldn't find where DMB was. When I asked the guy working there where I could find their music he said "what is the Dave Matthews Band?"

That's relevant on a few levels. Most stores don't sell music, and when they do (like Best Buy), it's a begrudging afterthought. Sure, there are still a handful of dedicated music shops out there. But the digital age has left them in the hands of only the most dedicated of collectors. "Why isn't this sold in stores?" Because it doesn't make sense for DMB or most bands to go through the effort of shipping boxes of CDs to a store that may never sell anyway. Everyone's online, the fans are online, go straight to the fans. It's been at least a decade since I stumbled upon some cool new music just by browsing a store.

Your other point is more depressing. "Who is DMB?" Exactly. Dave doesn't seem to get that. He's pushing away the hardcore fans in favor of the new fans. What he doesn't see is that really AREN'T any new fans. Not enough to support alienating your loyal fanbase that found the band when they actually WERE popular. You & Me still plays at dentist offices around the country, but really, DMB hasn't had a proper hit single since Where Are You Going. Arguably earlier, even.

Yeah I understand the process and why it doesn't make sense to rely on places like Best Buy, was just curious while I was there. Thing for me is that I don't really care if DMB is popular, just want good shows and I haven't seen a bad show in several years. Big picture they just need to write good music and make good decisions on singles, it's not some crazy concept.

It would help your argument if you understood how retail and inventory specifically works. It is my understanding that BestBuy buys goods from its vendors and supply chain rather than on consignment. Which means that DMB or bands don't care what happens once they are on the shelves other than the fact SoundScan won't count the sale until it is rung up.

Furthermore, DMB does not sit in the warehouse and pack their own records. That is what RCA and the distribution company is for. I believe they even do the Live Trax series...

Won't this be the only true live recording we have of a solo WWYS? I know there's a demo version but that was obviously in a studio...

Feels like this could sell more than most of their recent releases. Anyone listening to DMB in the 90s who liked Live @ Luther may buy this on nostalgia alone. If they find it.
