Leather Jacket recs?

I've never owned one before, but i think i am going to give it a shot this winter. Gonna ask for it as an Xmas present from the rents, i'd like to keep the price reasonable, like under $200.

Anybody have a recommendation of where to start looking? I have no idea what i want or what i'm even looking for.

Many more functional jackets for that price. The only reason to go leather is for aesthetics. I will get one someday, but if you are looking for something to keep warm, repel water/wind, ect. synthetic is the way to go.

Like a Faux Leather, or something entirely different like a Pea Coat?

I'm looking for something that can function as something to keep me warm in the harsh winter winds on campus, but something that can be fashionable enough to wear out and not look like a total slob (aka my old Carrhart).

Pea coats are the shit. Perfect blend of fashion(did I really just say that?) and functionality. Polo and LL Bean make good ones. They are about $1750-250 iirc

Might have to check em out. Are they comfortable?

Do they have like a herringbone patterns? Looking for a universal look that will go will a variety of outfits. That's why I originally thought Leather.

    Yikes!

I have one sort of like this:

    http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-150...t-big-tall.jsp

I love it and get compliments on it all the time.

    Re: Leather Jacket recs?

I have a Roundtree and Yorke lambskin leather coat that my mom bought me for Christmas about 20 years ago. It's got one small hole in the right pocket but other than that, it's in great condition. It's a bit heavy so it's not something I like to wear all the time. It's got a classy yet casual look to it that makes it a perfect compliment for jeans or slacks.

I also own a peacoat from Old Navy that I bought on sale for about $40. I probably wear that more than anything (but living in Texas it doesn't really get that cold for extended periods of time). I prefer the peacoat because it has the flip up collar and buttons so when the wind really starts blowing cold it makes a nice shield against my neck and cheeks. For as thin as it is (compared to my leather coat) it really keeps me warm, but not unbearable when I just need something slightly stronger than a windbreaker/trackie.

I would say though: It seems you're searching for a jacket at the wrong time of the year. You probably get a bit more selection right now, but the prices will be higher. If it's not a necessity then I would hold off until right after spring when stores start trying to clear out their winter/spring stock.

Oh, it's a terrible time to go cold wweather shopping but I'm getting by right now with hoodies from H&M that are meant for cool fall days and not 5 degrees with the wind chill.

I originally thought Leather for the investment factor of having it for years. The pea coat might be something I buy myself.

Is there a huge difference between the different types of leather and Faux Leather?

Pea coats look good and have a great warm material.

I'm a big fan of Columbia (brand) jackets. You can spend $160 on a REALLY nice jacket from them. Warm, fashionable, comfortable and their longevity is amazing.

but I bought a pea coat this winter and I've had 3 different people tell me I look like a robot when I wear it....not sure if that is an insult or a compliment. I assume they are just impressed by my broad shoulders and square-like frame

All Saints is great, though above your price range. BUT they also have huge sales in winter. They just ended a 30% off sale last week, and will have more throughout the holiday season. I got mine 40% off last year. Was still more than you wanted but a lot less than normal. And it's a badass jacket.

If you splurged or split the cost it'd be worth it.

    J. Crew has two great jackets, their Pea coat and University jacket with thinsulate that keeps you warm.

You could also check out an Army Surplus store for some great jackets as well, I have a peacoat that I bought from one about 10 years ago and it still is in great condition, same with the jackets from J. Crew.

Gonna head out to the usual suspects this week and try on some different looks and styles of coats/jackets.

    Macy's, Dillards, Khols, Burlington, Marshalls.

    J. Crew is just too far out of the price range.
