Yeah, I only like a few of the songs on there right now (like two), but I am with you on the not liking the new album so far. I need to give the new album a few more listens and see how I like it.

Their new album is decent. I've enjoyed it after listening to it a couple 10-20 times.

Absolutely love the new album. I had heard Crane Wife before, liked it, and then kinda forgot about them. I downloaded Hazards of Love on a whim and it blew my mind. Fantastic stuff. I went back and downloaded all their other stuff...I still like the Crane Wife more than the others, but not as much as the new one.

Also, to people who say the new album is repetitive...you do know it's basically one track, right? It's one song broken up into 17 sections.

I love this concept, they did it with a few songs on Crane Wife too (most notably Come and See/The Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel the Drowning)

This album is awesome. Its grown on me alot over the past two days. I really enjoyed the heavy metal sound they have towards the end of the album. And who the hell is the girl that sings on the album to besides Jenny? Shes got a sick voice.

Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond and Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond lend their vocals throughout the album.

So whats the concept? I've listened to it alot in the past week. I get the whole Raker story part and his kids are haunting him in the end. But I'm still confused to the begining and middle part.

"The Hazards of Love centers around a love story, similar to the use of recurring stories in The Crane Wife: a woman named Margaret (voiced by Stark) falls in love with a shape-shifting forest dweller (voiced by Meloy). A jealous forest queen (voiced by Worden) and an ensemble of recurring characters bring conflict to the album's story arc."

I love how the Decemberists make me think of the 1600's. I can't explain why. But every time I listen to them I feel like it's really really really old music.

I posted this in the AOTD thread about a month ago. Should help. It's my interpretation:

    STORYLINE of Hazards of Love:

margaret sees wounded fawn, morphs into william, she loves william, forest queen doesnt approve, they fuck in forest, rake kidnaps margaret, brings her across a river that is tough to cross, william says if the river lets him cross, he will sacrifice himself to it upon rescuing his lady, the kids of the rake get revenge on the rake (since he murdered them), margret and william are together, but william has to die, so margaret agrees to drown with him.

    ROLES:
    William: Colin
Margaret: Becky Stark (of Lavender Diamond)
Forest Queen: Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond and former backup singer of Sufjan Stevens)
    Rake: Colin
    Ghost of Kids: Random Children

I think. It also says "Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles." But I have yet to decipher who they are or where they're at in the album.

Lastly, after many years of listening to many bands, I still think that the Decemberists may have my favorite song of all time. I cannot tell you why I think its the greatest song ever, and I know in no way should it be labeled with such distinction, but it has this sort of magical power over me that just makes me melt into nothing. No other song has made me feel this way. Anyway the song is "Shiny" of their 5 Song (EP). Check it out.

The PDF for Hazards of Love. Might clear some things up; it's got lyrics and lists who's saying what.

The Decemberists sound like Portland to me. Which seems obvious, I know, since they are from Portland.. but if you've been to the city, I think you'll know what I mean.

I have a playlist of just artists from the Northwest.. I love how all of the music from the upper-left reflect our area - the big cities and all of our nature-y outdoor goodness

I'm not sure how to link to it.. but if you go into itunes and search for the "NPR: Live Concerts From All Songs Considered" Podcast, you can download a Decemberists show from SXSW where they played The Hazards of Love in it's entirety. Seriously badass, everyone should check it out.

I saw them in June, and it was amazing. The second set was just as good as the first.

I've been listening to them all week long.

I know, I already saw. If you go to decemberistsshop.com, you can actually get the DVD of it for free if you buy HoL on vinyl or CD. But, that's the only way you'll ever get a DVD of it. I bought my 2nd HoL vinyl yesterday. My first one is autographed, so I never played it. But, I do want to listen to it. So, the deal works out for me both way!

    Re: The Decemberists

I heard a song over the weekend with the chorus that went like "Go on and get gone" (I think). The person said it was the decemberists but it didn't sound like any of their stuff that I've heard. Does anyone know what song I'm talking about?

I bought The Crane Wife on a whim because John Buccigross (ESPN columnist) recommended it. I was a little weirded out at first, but grew to love it. Great band

I absolutely adore The Hazards of Love. Its such a great album. I've been learning to play it straight through with my friend, just piano, guitar, and vocals. Its becoming a fun little project.
