I only like a few of their songs, though I never really listened to their whole song catalog.

    Re: Smashing Pumpkins Appreciation

I could go on and on about this band. Thanks to the OP for starting the thread. I'll do what I can to keep the appreciation going.

The Pumpkins were the first rock band I started listening to and MCIS was the first rock album that I had bought back in 3rd grade. I must say that it was quite the album to introduce me to alternative rock music. Because I grew up listening to them, my favorite songs of theirs have varied and changed so much over time and even today 15 years later, I am still learning to appreciate so many different songs from their catalog.

I obviously started out loving all of their popular singles but I find myself more often listening to all of their b-sides from Pisces Iscariot, TAFH, and Judas O. When I heard that the band was breaking up I was heartbroken because I never got the opportunity to see them live. Seven years later when I found out they were reforming, I was jumping for joy and made sure I had tickets to their first tour. Needless to say, it was everything I dreamed and hoped for from a Pumpkins show.

Like I said before, I can keep talking about them, but I will leave this post at that for right now.

Just like DMB, it has always been hard for me to pinpoint my favorite song out of their catalog. But as of right now, the songs I have been most digging have been a lot of their softer mellower tunes. Here is the list of songs I regularly have in my lineup nowadays.

    Last Song
    Mayo (acoustic)
Try, Try, Try (Machina II version) <---- Listen to this if you never have, much better than the Machina version
    Here Is No Why
    Porcelina
    Whir
    Set the Ray to Jerry
Home <---- Saw this live last year and it has been rewritten and sounds amazing!

I agree somewhat. I can't say that anything off of Machina, Machina II, Zeitgeist, or any of the post Pumpkins projects compare to the quality of music they released before Adore. However there definitely are several gems that they wrote after Adore, they just aren't as well known. Like I kinda said before, listen to Judas O or Machina II and its EP's and you should be able to find some tunes that you like.

I'm still trying to get used to Zeitgeist but it is really hard because I hate the way the album was mixed and mastered. It also doesn't help that Billy is playing every single part on the album other than the drums. Its too much Billy to handle at one time. The parts of the album that get to me the most are those where it has layered harmonized vocals, ehkkkkkkk. The new songs sound a lot better live and I think the new band mates have done a great job. American Gothic, the 4 song EP that was released later, sounds pretty good and I'll listen to it from time to time.

My biggest criticism about Zeitgeist overall is that it is a very underwhelming album. Nothing about it sticks in your head and makes you want to listen to it over and over again. I tried but it just didn't work for me. There is nothing about it that stirs my emotions or pulls me into any song.

Another thing that I have really appreciated since the group reformed is Billy's policies in regards to the concerts. The fact that there are no restrictions for cameras, tapers, or even video cameras is a first for me for any concert I have been to. I was able to grab footage with my digital camera of the show and I didn't have to worry about the damn ushers confiscating anything. People are always set up with tripods and they are able to record the entire show to enjoy over and over again anytime they want.

I was the same way - never thought I'd have a chance to see them, and then ended up at the four night stand in Philly a couple years back. It was incredible. They started with a 10 song acoustic set on N4 that was unbelievable. Rotten Apples, Rocket, Disarm, 1979, Winterlong, Blue Skies Bring Tears, etc. Simply amazing.

Ha! I was at the same stand at the Tower Theater. My buddy and I, who is an even more die hard fan, went and had never seen them live before. I believe I was at N2 but it may have been N3. What an amazing show, I was blown away by so many things. I had never been to the venue before and it definitely was one of the better places I have seen a show. I loved how the lighting was set up along the pillars.

The show I went to was the one that was professionally filmed and then streamed online for the AT&T Blue Room. That in itself was awesome because I got to watch the show again.

I really loved the opening band too "Explosions in the Sky". My friend that I was with listened to them regularly and didn't even know that they were opening until we got there. Needless to say he was pleasantly surprised as was I. I listen to their albums all the time for mood music and when I'm concentrating on work. Their 40 minute non-stop set at the show was impressive IMO.

I think it was N2 that was webcast. Nearly positive, anyway. The acoustic set on N4 was outstanding, but N2 takes the cake for me. Drown, Hummer, Home, Perfect, Set The Ray To Jerry, Ava Adore, Starla. If only it had the Where Boys Fear To Tread opener from N3, it'd be perfect. I couldn't believe they didn't play 33, Silverfuck, or An Ode To No One throughout the four nights though. Not to mention Muzzle was on the setlist for three out of the four nights and was never played, and they started playing Porcelina, Soma, Geek USA, and Mayonaise just two or three stops later on the tour. That was awfully disappointing. The 15 minute Heavy Metal Machine four nights in a row was quite a drag too, but that's the Pumpkins for ya. For anyone who thinks Dave plays what he wants regardless of what the crowd wants, go to a Pumpkins show. You won't mind Cornbread so much anymore. Billy doesn't give a fuck, but I quite enjoy it.

Edit: It broke my heart when Billy pointed out an XYU sign (I think on N1) and said "we don't know that one again yet," and then still didn't get it down to play it any of the next three nights. Hearing that song live just once would have made my life. They could COVER Cornbread for all I care. 20 times in a row, for the rest of the show, if only they'd played XYU.

After reading what you said it really is amazing the how large their catalog is and just how many good songs that Billy wrote. I always find it fun to listen to the Pistachio Medley and just think about how great some of those guitar riffs are and what kind of songs they could have turned into. It is really crazy how talented Billy is, it is just too bad that he is an egotistical maniac and caused everyone in the band to leave him, even Jimmy!

Including covers, unreleased tracks, live only, Corgan solo, Zwan, etc: 994 songs. A quick scan of the list looks like only 1/5 - 1/6 or so are covers. It's absolutely absurd.

Edit: If you click the "Played Live" button, you'll see that 635 of those songs have been played live. I challenge anyone to find me a band that has played more songs throughout their career.

i just listened to MCIS all the way through. Gotta be one of the best albums ever. Its so diverse and ambitious that by the time you get to Farewell and Goodnight you literally feel like you went on a trip. The way that the little piano piece at the end on the album drifts off is perfect closure to it all.

Geez, I had downloaded Gish and Siamese Dream awhile ago, but I listened to most of the suggestions in here and I'm blown away again.

Its sad that Corbin's big head got in the way of such creative genius...even though most of that creative genius is in his big head
