I loved the Pumpkins. What has become of them? All that is left is Billy and that's what happens when you let ego get in the way of creative collaborations. There's a good reason the guy goes through band members like crazy. Still, the nihilistic tone of Mellon Collie is fascinating in comparison to the almost Christian musings found on the Zwan album and newer recordings.

I think they kind of suck. A lot of that has to do with the cold production Billy seems to favor these days, and some of it has to do with the fact that the songs just aren't that good.

Since the new incarnation of The Mighty SP, everything has been pretty mediocre and lack luster. Not bad, but not good either. Billy needs another family member to die or something so he can start writing better music again.

With that said though, I saw a show during the Zeitgeist tour and I was very impressed, even with the new songs. He also reworked some songs from the Machina albums and they sound a lot better.

I agree. I do like Machina a lot and what I've heard of Machina 2 however.

I'm a much bigger fan of Machina 2 and the b-sides. I remember how surprised I was when I first listened because of how much better it sounded than the first album.

Machina 1 just doesn't do it for me. there are probably about 4 or 5 songs that I enjoy off of the album, the rest are meh.

The song that I remember the most that he reworked was Home. I didn't even recognize it when he first started playing and was wondering what this new song was cause it sounded great and much better than anything on the new album at the time. Go on Youtube and check it out, I'm assuming somebody has a version uploaded there.

Landslide is a fleetwood mac song, but I agree their version is awesome.

It's hard to call Billy a "Christian" because he is so ambiguous. Mary Star of the Sea, to me, is a beautiful example of someone realizing though that the material life may not have been all they had though it would be:

"Everything just feels like rain, the road we're on, the things we crave, everything just feels like rain, if I should sleep what's left to dream when everything feels like rain?" To me, that is like saying "I got big, I got famous, got a whole lot of money, bought everything, and found out it all comes down to nothing."

I think Billy is mixing Catholicism and Buddism to come up with his own thing. Still, it's a far cry from the guy who said "emptiness is loneliness and loneliness is cleanliness and cleanliness is godliness and god is empty just like me".

A friend of mine from high school committed suicide when the song "Disarm" was real big. Those two events are forever linked to me.

It was a set of live songs, demos, outtakes, etc that Billy compiled as a cassette for some people in the early 90s.

Billy is still writing good songs, he's just not releasing them. A lot of the new stuff played on the last few tours was really good. And when he does release them, he fills them with terrible rock cliches (see A Song for a Son).

I also think "Hummer" is an absolutely perfect song... the outro is beautiful. I go back and forth between that and 1979 as my favorite. I think I have to lean towards the latter for sentimental reasons, but it's like 1a and 1b.
