I hope to visit this thread a bite more in the coming months after I get my Nikon F100 configuration set up with a kirk L-bracket and the 10-pin remote. I also just purchased a Markins M10 ballhead and I'm going to pull the trigger on a Fesiol tripod in the coming weeks. The M10 is a thing of beauty, I tell you, and totally worth the $$$.

I'm all for the photography contest idea. I have a ton of Velvia that needs to get used!

    Velvia.

I'm a big fan of Fuji's Neopan 400 since you can push it to 1600 when needed.

Anyone ever fiddled with some IR film?

Cool shots. I went to Italy for my honeymoon about a year ago. Rome was very cool.

This is a link to a few of my Italy pictures. We were in Venice, Rome and the Amalfi Coast.

What I have in mind is on the first Sunday of each month, I create a thread called "antsmarching.org Photography Contest (insert month here) 2009". In this thread (ie. the one that this post is in), suggestions of types of photography, ideas/themes/words, etc, can be made, which we can choose from and make the focus point of the photo comp for that month. For example, January's could be for cityscapes, and February's could revolve around the word "love". The simple idea would be to take the main focus and present a photo that complements that focus. After 2 weeks of entries, we spend the next week voting, and the winner is announced at the end of the voting period. No prizes...just the sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that people don't think your photography's crap.

Thoughts? Ideas on rules (for example, unless the main focus involved photo manipulation, entries are not to be Photoshopped or edited)?
I'd participate in this too... I ended up buying a Nikon D90 around X-Mas and have been trying to teach myself whenever the opportunity comes about...

I think themes are good, but there should be no rules against editing.

IMO, editing is all part of the art. Of course nothing can be added to the picture, like inserting something that wasnt there (I dont even know how to do that honestly!)

But editing things like color, sharpening, levels, curves, layers, etc are all part of the process.

Photoshop is to the 21st century as the dark room was to the 20th and 19th centuries. You should always be able to use photoshop.

I suppose you could make a rule as to not wanting layers or maybe even masks... but... I mean... I don't know. Some of the coolest photography that I see now is involving HDR stuff... multiple exposure within the same print. A lot of that is photoshop manipulation (beyond, and including what the camera does). Photos are frickin amazing, almost paint like.

Wanna see HDR in action? Not familiar with it?

    Check THIS out - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008...-hdr-pictures/

Some just STUPID pictures there. IMPOSSIBLE without modern technology.

yeah HDR is awesome and very hard to pull off effectively. It takes some talent to do so. At the same time, some people hate it and prefer a much nature image. Its all a matter of taste.

My thought behind that was to make it as level a playing field as possible...just a man/woman and their camera. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to Photoshop, and I know how those basic enhancements work, and I knew that there were techniques such as HDR (even though I didn't know what it was called until just now) that could so mindblowingly transform an image.

If there's enough of a call for the comp, and a permit for basic editing, then that's cool. In any case, one of the themes/projects I had in mind was something that involved complex editing techniques...

I have no problem with the contest limiting the editing to some extent but slight level and curve tweaks are very basic corrections which in the past would be done by photo machines. Limiting them seems... I don't even know... pointless I guess.

I would just leave it as basic editing is allowed. We can assess later if we feel like people are getting away from the spirit of the contest. I feel like the biggest point is that the pictures should be the best for the theme that is described. This should be regardless of editing...

trust me, even a non-edited photo can win a contest.

How about the rule is you must post any editing you did. I think that would even help the novice PS user get better. I only do basic editing myself. And even complex HDR is hard to pull off and I bet wouldnt win most times. Knowing complex PS tricks doesnt really give the photographer the advantage all the time, IMO.

is that open to the public? I'd love to get up there one day. Can you bring a camera in St Paul's and/or the Sistine Chapel?

I was thinking that way...plus also like the idea that the winner of each contest picks the subsequent theme.

You want the photoshop work to be subtle... Its not supposed to make the photo, its supposed to finish it off, Add a nice flare (that can't be seen). The winning photo will be the winning photo regardless of photoshop edits (usually).

The only exception to this is HDR. HDR is supposed to be surreal. Its supposed to make the picture almost look like a painting. Its like when in painting, people began trying to make the painting looks like photographs. Except the opposite.

If we don't do an HDR themed event, I doubt if its going to win a contest. HDR is REALLY heard to pull off. I haven't gotten ANYTHING special with my camera doing it yet. In fact, I have a finished jpeg folder, and I don't have a single HDR picture in there. Nothing has even made my picture folder. (That folder then gets chosen from, as pictures to potentially be posted on my flickr site)

Actually, also... One criticism of dSLRs in the consumer range is that they blow highlights. One correction for this, is to underexpose a stop and then add the exposure via photoshop. THATS the type of touches people do in photoshop. It doesn't change the picture in the least.

If you had exposed it correctly and there was a bright spot, it will/could ruin the detail of the spot. With a darker, less exposed picture, you have all the data. You can then add brightness or exposure (different) to the image, stopping at whatever point you choose.

Its one of the reasons I laugh at the reviewers criticism of the Pentax dSLR's metering. They always say exposures are "underexposed" But the real answer is, no, you morons, they underexpose on purpose cause they don't want to blow the highlights. If I just spent > 500 dollars on a camer and lens, I certainly don't want it blowing highlights on the RAW 15MB file.

I don't have a tripod yet. I've been shooting a lot of handheld shutter stuff. Too long really. 1/6, 1/4... Pentax has body IS which is awesome but I still need to get a tripod. Or, actually, a monopod. Whatever's smallest. And cheap. But actually works.

I made a print of my favorite night exposure (attached) but we made it darker in the print because it looked too bright. WRONG. The picture looks WAY better in the file. I'm kinda pissed. Same lab did a good job cropping the landscape (also attached) they tweaked the color in the sky SLIGHTLY. It came out real well. Pissed about the nite exp though. Its all wrong on my wall. And its perfect here (on my computer)

Anyone ever have a similar problem? Lab just adjust your picture and its not right anymore? Mine is just so dark, it got destroyed by making it darker. It was ALREADY PEFECT! haha

The one with the tree is top notch. I'm a huge fan of taking pictures of trees.

If there's enough of a call for the comp, and a permit for basic editing, then that's cool. In any case, one of the themes/projects I had in mind was something that involved complex editing techniques...
I'm with you in the fact that I'm against editing. This is only due to my own ignorance with PhotoShop and the like...
