Re: The Riff

I freakin' love the pings.

My guess is that in the studio, all the pings are Tim. I haven't heard it live, but my guess there is that either Boyd and Tim split them, or, Tim does all of them, playing only one ping, then using a pedal and that system where you can record a measure, and then it automatically repeats itself. I forget what this is called.

I just realized that this tune gives me the same feeling that I get from JTR, Shotgun, and Stay or Leave. I can't necessarily explain it, nor that particular grouping of songs, but that's some pretty good company, I'd say.

Carter's drum work behind the verse starting with Dave singing, "I've only got a minute or two to spare..." is unbelievable. His little drum rolls add a nice touch.

I heard this song at it's debut in Camden, and then at IZOD N1 and N2, and Barclay's Center. I cannot get sick of this song. It is just a really great song.

YMDT blew chunks in 2005. the riff is actually a really good song already. it should still become better as they get more comfortable playing it and add new things, but the riff is like if YMDT started in 2007 (even as late as 2008) and turned into what it is now.

Agree. It's going to grow to be pretty beastly.

how much more can it grow though? the band had a clear vision of how the song was to evolve from the start to its end. they can't add anything in the middle or else it would ruin the flow of the song. and adding anything at the beginning wouldn't work either. the end is the only place where they really have room to do anything, and they're already doing something with that. tim's solo is supposed to be balls to the walls because thats how the song builds. other than maybe rashawn throwing in some horn lines to fill the space like they do on other songs, i don't see it changing a hell of a lot. its 6-7 minutes long. its good at that length. thats probably where it'll stay.

Gotta say, YMDT is leagues above the Riff and I don't think that'll ever change.

agreed sir, especially since they've sped it up so much.

The pings are Boyd using an effect on his violin. I noticed this at the Gorge when I was in the pit.

Months later, this is the still the most affecting song on the record for me. The strange combination of eerie warmth places it with the best of them...I can never just passively hear this tune, I always have to turn it up and really concentrate on the subtle nuances that truly give it that classic DMB/Lillywhite character. Wudda track.

There's great drumming in this song already, but I think after it's played in regular rotation for a while this is going to become a monster for Carter. There's so much room for fills and so many accents to play with, I can't wait to hear him really go crazy on it.

COMPLETELY AGREED...The instrumentation gets my gut...and the crunchy-ass Timmy solo at the end ROCKS!

Just wanted to mention, I know it's been used the last 3 years but I didn't really think about it til last night...

How weird is the video they play behind them during The Riff? I obviously know it's from the album cover but I can't imagine how strange it must have been to film with all those giant dave drawn heads
