Dave said, and I'm paraphrasing, "this song is a letter from a father to a son, after he's had too much to drink." The father is the drunken soldier.

IMO this is the most overrated song in their catalog. I dig the intro before the intro, the actual intro, don't even mind the lyrics, delivery, or music during the verses/chorus that much. The outro is what totally kills this song for me, it's a 3 minute snooze fest, that goes nowhere. Good idea... Poor execution.

True. I was talking more about the hype (for DS) before AFTW was released.

That's my favorite part of the whole song HAHA. I love how chill it is. I find that to be the best part of the song.

I'm a fan of the song, but I can definitely agree the song was a bit overstated. When someone like Steve Lillywhite calls a song "EPIC", everyone is going to lose their minds. Solid tune with a wicked chill outro, but not as "epic" as it was stated to be.

Yeah I do remember that hype as well. As usual-OVER hyped. Just like the entire record.

Anything DMB does is going to be overhyped. The fan base has been disappointed in some capacity since 2001. So AFTW is no different than its predecessors in that regard.

I don't think DS is a masterpiece of music in the way we think of say Two Step or Last Stop.... But it's as "epic" (a word that I've come to despise it's so misused as a description for anything) as anything the band has released on an album since 2001. I quite like it, and it's a fantastic and fun studio song. I thinks it's so easy to try to analyze DMBs music, that we forget to just enjoy stuff sometimes.

I think a lot of this underscores the fact that DMB hasn't had a huge live song emerge from the catalog in a long time. Another Bartnder, Ants or DDTW. They need one. Hello Again could've been, but it's fizzled out of the live setting.

drunken soldier from a lyrics and melody stand point it is horrible. only gaucho is worse in that regard on AFTW in my opinion. guacho and drunken soldier i think are two of his worst song writing efforts, both bottom 10 for me

its a shame too because i really do like the music for drunken soldier. intro is awesome and i like the outro quite a bit. on the other hand, pretty much everything about gaucho sucks in my opinion

Glad we got that cleared up

Gaucho and Drunken Soldier are both solid. Not top tier, but solid.

Also, at the 9:13 mark, Dave speaks a line, then sings it at the 9:23 mark - any idea what he's saying?

I like Gaucho...except for the kids chorus. That part kind of grates on me.

Totally with you on Drunken Soldier. Easily the best song on AFTW, and probably my favorite DMB studio track since the Busted Stuff era. Seriously.

Well I am not sure that Drunken soldier is the kinda song that should be a live setting presence. I mean I like it it's good in my opinion. But if other people have a preferred pace at shows it may make sense to why they are not as big of fans. But to rate the song with or without at a show live yea it is very good. My ranks change but most likely in the top half of Aftw! Lots going on in the studio version it can't help but be interesting.

I saw DS live last year in an outdoor setting it was just fantastic!

"shine your light while you got one" is one of my favorite lines.

It was windy that night (Gorge N2) and when they went into the Pink Floyd outro, I was on the fence overlooking the crowd, the puff-puffs of smoke doubled, it was just chill and just perfect.
