It's ok...in my eyes "Mercy" can't be too good without Boyd's part. You can't hear him at all in this recording. I love what he does on this tune.

I really did not like this song initially... but it's grown on me immensely. Top 5 on the album, that outro is just so fucking good.

I prefer it like that too, with Jeff's riff subtle and restrained and only at the end, instead of dominating the whole thing

From the first time I saw the song debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and seeing it live twice now, and listening to it a lot on AFTW, I believe Mercy is the closest thing to a hymn that I want or need in my life.

I seem to like "Mercy" a lot more than most. It'd probably be boring as hell live, but I like the lyrics and stuff.

My lady is stuck on Mercy since Irvine CA, it truly is a great tune.

Its good live for a slower jam, people seem eager to sing along to it. good times.

Love the song on the album, but I'd be fine with never seeing it live again. I don't think they should have dragged it out into a 10-minute song with an ending "jam" that is mostly repetitive and doesn't really go anywhere.

Enjoy the lyrics and the melody of the song, but it should have stayed a 5-minute song.

I've always thought Mercy to be one of the stronger cuts on AFTW, and they can play that slow jam for 15 minutes, as far as I'm concerned. One question though: Why do so many people think that that one line in the song goes "Because crime won't save or feed a hungry child?" Early reviews I read about that song made that mistake, but I figured they'll eventually realize the word he sings is "crying," not "crime." Crime doesn't even make sense in that context!

So fast forward to today, and I see the same mistake made by the staff in the lead article for antsmarching dot org! What gives?! He does sing "crying," does he not?!

I've seen Mercy a lot (over 10 times now), and trust me, I could go without seeing it for a while at a show. That being said, I still enjoy it live. To me, the jam serves a similar role as Proudest Monkey. It's a song that allows me to relax, let the music come to me, take a deep breath, enjoy the second hand marijuana in the air, stare up at the moon/stars, feel the gentle summer breeze on my face, and reflect on how lucky I am to be outside at a dmb concert on a nice night like this. The studio version is fine too, I like it.

I think its kinda funny that people hate this, but if they started playing ten minute heartbeat jams into rapunzel again, it would be celebrated.

6/8/2013 would be my favorite version if it were a bit shorter. Mark Whitfield is great on it.

Mercy has really grown on me lately. I like listening to live versions of it, though not sure how I'd take it if it was played at a show I was at, but I like it. The one Danny mentioned is a good one, I also like the one from 2013 with Carlos Malta on flute.

Totally agree! it's all about that jam!

and i prefer the 2013 live versions also. the 2012 tour didn't bring the jam to what it became a year later. now it has faded somehow (not so intense drumming from Carter anymore)

one of my favourite versions is from Southaven 2013. check it out!

I noticed that too. Don't call Dave out on a lyric that doesn't make sense when you don't actually know what the lyric is

the "staff" didn't write it. It was written by a fan defending the song.

the "staff" did think it was pretty funny that the defender didn't know the words, however. The "staff" may have intentionally left the error in place.
