It seems like this song is just way too crowded during the verses. The chorus is catchy, though.

Also hear more complex drumming as well. Also looking forward to seeing if they do sax / violin / trumpet intertwining parts a la "Spoon."

Also agree that this was selected in spirit of Obama being there. Probably not the 1st single, but amen to good lyrics and structure.
    Good call.

    Oh
    Crash
    Out Of My Hands

These all share the prominent bass note changes in the chord progressions.

My honest first opinion on first listen was underwhelmed and reminded me too much of Out Of My Hands.

After second and third listen it has a completely different feel and I can appreciate it for what it is and not what I was hoping/expecting/wanting it to be. It's very pretty and uplifting.

That said it does very much sound like a Dave Matthews solo album single...not a DMB album single. Either way, I like.

I think it's a great little tune. Sort of simple in a solo setting but I think it has a lot of potential with the band. Can't wait for the album!!!

agree with the OOMH, as well as Sister. I think beautiful is the word to use to describe the song. Could hear it solo E1 as well as a powerful building song like Crash is used mid-set to pump it up.

Good call, esp re: long wordy lines. But there are some gems:
"Love is not a whisper or a weakness" - great line! And the repetitive flow of "get together" has a nice feel.

This definitely isn't a single - it was played to coincide with Obama's appearance.

To an earlier poster who suspected "Christ" would replace "Crime" on the album, I think the line is "Crying won't save or feed a hungry child."

Interesting point. The song is very God-centric. I could see either. Seems as though he does hesitate, as though he had to think about the word he changed. You'll never know...until the album

It's definitely Crying or acutally "Cryin" is the way he pronouces it. It is not CRIME, which wouldn't make a single bit of sense, not that he's known to make a ton of sense in certain songs.

But what if this was the very first time you heard it not the studio version.

I do like the guitar part better on LYD, but at this point we would tear these lyrics apart and say it is stupid and that he repeats don't walk away, ect.

I'm just saying if that was the first song we heard off crash in that setting in this day and age we would criticize even that.

The guitar work in LYD is on an entirely different level than Mercy. I like the melody of Mercy, the lyrics are ok, the structure is fine, but the guitar work is really, really bland.

I have a feeling either the guitar part will be different or will not be the primary focal point of the song on the album. It's just way too generic to carry a song.

Overall, I thought the performance last night was pretty nice, but I wouldn't be surprised if the album version sounds a lot different.

    I guess this is possible.

Best case = PM type song. (Sounds like it will be more upbeat than PM, but i mean as good as PM while sounding bad solo)

Worst case = Dive in type song.

    Hoping for the best.

I think it should've been just Dave. Captain Kirk is great and all, but he really had nothing to offer but a couple of fills. I'd rather see just Dave or DMB.

I disagree...I liked his guitar part in this song. Also, I liked his backup vocals at the end....definitely vocals that Rashawn will be singing when this song is played on tour.

I'd just listened to it again, and you're right, I really like the back-up vocals in it. Rashawn or Carter would be great with it.

God-centrict in the notion that he's saying:

"Can't give up and hope God will intercede" (You have to solve your own problems, not sit on the sidelines, hoping a god will do it for you).

"Can't lay down and hope a miracle will change things. So lift up your eyes, lift up your heart." (Same as above).
