Wow, I wasn't expecting that. I'm diggin' this song. I see so much hate for the kids' chanting, yet I think it's one of the best parts of the song. the Distorted Bass --> Echo Vocals --> Chanting Children ---> Horns, was just awesome, to me.

The kids chanting reminds me of If You're Feeling Sinister, by Belle and Sebastian. Overall, I really like this song. Very catchy. I'm sure that opening riff will hang around in my brain for a while.

Really dig the bass part that Stefan plays at :52-:56 second mark during the lyric " look down upon from above" and also the notes during the chrous.

In Portuguese it's pronounced GOW - oo - SHOW
yea, it's used to describe people from a specific region of southern brazil... I think. should be a connection with their culture or costumes, maybe even history. no idea. there's a dmb brazil forum out there i think

I'm still intrigued by this song. In a good way I think. People saying the lyrics are cheesy are weird and probably infertile. yea, definitely infertile.

Thanks man for the lyrics. They should have left this song on the cutting room floor imo. Notice Lillywhite has the Pink Floyd children singing in a lot of his recent stuff eg 30 seconds to mars. It fucking doesn't work for DMB.

I believe this song is a sign that they started to evolve again. This song is what I would expect if the Lillywhite sessions were released and two years later the band made another album with lillywhite without all the drama. It is really good and I think people will start to like it as time goes on, just like Before These Crowded Streets.
this was my first thought too. the first two minutes are very similar to the stone, fast picking, a lot of the same notes, but what jumped out at me was the structure; the horn part between the first and second verses is just like the stone with the sax playing over the guitar riff

I definitely would not say this is anti-BTCS. I think its every where in this song.

I didn't get into it until halfway through the song. Good good sign for me. Shit I didn't even realize it was even catchy at all until the second listen. Now I'm just listening over and over and over. Everytime I get happier with it. September isn't such a bad wait for the new album. At least we know!

Couldn't agree more. I'm not sold on this song whatsoever. While I do think the audience will eventually play that part of the children singing (which is always cool), they sound out of place in the song. But then again, all DMB songs sound better live than they do in the studio.

Anyone else agree that the acoustic Mercy is way better than Gaucho?

(Sorry to be a hater, just my humble opinion)

I don't think it's a good song. It's ok, but the lyrics are Spaceman bad, and the music isn't really anything special.

I was really disappointed this wasn't a cover of Steely Dan's "Gaucho." This song's pretty cool. I'll need a few more listens before I can decide how I really feel about it. I'm now more excited about the album, though.

Honestly...love the music, hate the lyrics. At what point did Dave become all about saving the world? I realize the presidential election is coming up, and the two songs we've heard so far (Mercy, Gaucho) have had some pretty strong political ties. I'm not going on one of those "this band is screwed" rants, but people said they'd be happy if Mercy was the worst song on the album. Personally, I'd be pissed if Gaucho wasn't the worst song on the album.

I might just loop the introduction and first couple verses. That's some really good good shit. My only real rift with this song right now is the chorus, great instrumentation and great structure. It restrains itself and that's something most DMB songs don't do, I think in BW it let go too often and the songs would get lost. Which I love sometimes, but this style is good artistry.

    Re: Goucho

I've listened to the song about 10 times now, a few thoughts:

    1) Musically, it is pretty different and I like it.

    2) Lyrics wise, this song is pretty cheesy and definitely lacking. Ants will certainly get tired of this song if it is played too regularly this tour.

    3) I hope people who say they really like this song actually like it, not just because it is 'brand new.' Listen to the song, and listen to it again and again. The band has definitely changed (and I accept that), but this song is nowhere close to some older gems.

    4) That said, I cannot wait to hear the rest of the album.
