Second listen, and I am seriously digging this song. Damn I wish they would move up the release date. I want to cruise through July with this album.

really digging this song so far, first of the new ones that i can't get out of my head, the vocal melodies keep popping up throughout the day today.....reminds me of dmb 04-07 (minus the stand up album)....with the guitar riff sounding like it should have been on john mayer continuum

Its catchy and nice. But the album is really seeming mellow. I like this song live- but I don't know if I think it should take up album space.

DMB is a live band. Always have been, always will be. How can one not be excited about hearing new DMB music live!?!?! I don't care if they ever release another album, Quite frankly. As long as they keep pumping out killer shows and throw in the occasional new song, I'm all set!

    Re: If Only

    I finally figured it out.

I can best describe If Only as being the Dr Jekkyl to Seven's Mr Hyde (or is it the other way around?). Either way.

The two come together to make one scary ass schizophrenic bipolor serial killer.

Seven is the deranged, crazy, messed up, dirty, filthy, lustful, hateful, vengeful persona of a seriously screwed up individual. This chick broke this guy's heart and the immediate response is pure deranged emotion and it gets ugly fast and the man's true colors are shown.

Then there is If Only. If Only is the 3 days after you fucked up and said shit you never should have said and so you come crawling back graveling and apologizing for all the ugly and horrible things you said and did. The guy sounds normal, sane, sincere and sweet but underneath of it all there is the undertone of desperation and creepiness that says "i'm sorry, i want you, and i'll do ANYthing to make that happen so don't you dare say no."

The songs even share an underlying groove. Seven, appropriately, is in 7/8 counts which gives that feeling of rushed, hurried, no time for thinking, just pure emotional reaction. Then If Only fills out the full count and sounds more intentional, deliberate, contrived/planned. It sounds nice and sweet but you want to believe it but something about it just screams "this ain't right man".

So there ya have it, my 'looking way too far into things' take on this song, which I think (the song) is awesome by the way. And even if this isn't the intent of the song, you'll never listen to it the same again.

Obviously not a hard one but listen to the song for strumming pattern. Loving this riff I write a lot of riffs with chromatics so this is my style.

    * I havent had the chance to figure out the chorus and bridge parts

90% of the song is this repeated
    e|--------------------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------------------| G|--------------------------------------------------------------------| D|44-445544-4455-44-445544-4455-44-445544-4455-44--445544-4455-| A|55-555555-5555-44-444444-4444-33-333333-3333-22--222222-2222-| E|--------------------------------------------------------------------|

I heard the beginning of this in Cincinnati. Dave was playing it and Stefan was laughing and shaking his head. Listened to this a few times in the car. Its nice but I need to give it a few more listens when I can focus my full attention on it before I make a decision.

Speaking of radio hits, I did hear Gaucho on the radio in Atlanta yesterday on 92.5 DAVE FM.

The more I listen to this song the more I fall in love with it. After hearing Gaucho and Mercy I was a little skeptical about what was to come from the new album but If Only has blown me away and now I cannot wait to hear more!

Funny -- I was thinking the two songs seemed linked in some way and couldn't put my finger on it. But I have been humming the If Only guitar riff with the Seven lyrics today for whatever reason and was amused how well they sort of fit like a melodic yin yang.

I agree. There were plenty of lyrics (or individual lines) on UTTAD and Crash that were not absolute gold in terms of songwriting. But within the flow and context of the song, and with Dave's vocal delivery and the band's music - they worked very well. At that time, Dave could sell a half-finished line. And of course, there were some songs that were lyrically great. But not all. I'd say BTCS brought the average up quite a bit, while previous albums were a little more uneven lyrically - but covered up so well!

    Re: If Only

I listened to the song this morning when I woke up before work and didn't have much time to really listen to it hard. Then I sat at work and watched the boards say it sucks and that it is awful, while some people really seemed to like and dig it. I love the John Mayer vibe comparison, and I don't think it is a bad one. Lots of Ants will tell you Continuum is one hell of an album and it comes up frequently in the JM thread as well as album of the day thread. After listening to If Only on the 1 cam sync video on youtube, I have to say I like it a lot. I think the music is pretty good, great to see a tune clock in at over 6 minutes on the very first play, lots of room for the horns to go wild on some extended jams. As far as all the complaining I see about the Mr Cool line I don't see that being any worse than some of the cheesy/goofy lines in Spaceman or Alligator Pie. Not to mention Rapunzel itself is an incredibly goofy, albeit a creative song about getting a blow job. Even Idea of You-which people really like and say they won't on an album-has some goofy lines.

Let's just all enjoy the new music, because musically the band is in a very good spot right now and they are being creative again. It wasn't all that long ago we were waiting four to five years in between albums and not getting new music all that often-and when we were it was questionable at times.
