Re: If Only

This song also sounds like it could mesh into idea of you quite well in an encore

The whole band doesn't come in on Sweet until after the verses and "Cover Me" part, and while I like the quiet Outro on Mercy, Lillywhite tweeted it as a full band monster (certainly debatable in the live version). And, as mentioned above, I was just waiting for Carter or Boyd to bust out something nasty on this song, and they kind of laid low. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic for the studio versions, but does anyone else see where I'm coming from? Like maybe this band doesn't wanna give everything about the album away during the tour?
awesome point. i agree.... i think your point is best made by looking at Gaucho... I've read a lot of opinions on here stating that the live version outshines the studio... i disagree... I would be far less excited about Gaucho if i hadn't heard what they did with it in the Studio. I think it is a very well developed song in the studio with awesome production. I have a feeling (at least i'm very hopeful) to be even more impressed with Sweet, Mercy, and If Only when i hear the studio cuts... Specific to If Only, i can picture the bridge "I want you back so..." part being awesome. And I think you're right... maybe the studio can capture better the intensity i feel can be built into that part and the outro as well... same thing i feel about Mercy though i think it's less of an issue of translation and more an issue of the band just preferring to play it the way they do live. I don't know.

Ok, I find that kind of amusing.

Anyway...I'm definitely "If Only". The guitar part is definitely reminiscent of John Mayer, in a good way, I think. I could see it being the second or third single that's released.

The album seems to be shaping up to be a very chill, laid back, but still pretty catchy album. Nice.

    Well said.

Btw, Take the studio Joyride, Hello Again, Beachball, (Cornbread?), and the best sounding live Sugar Will, Crazy Easy, Good Good Time, Shotgun, Break Free, Butterfly that you can find, burn the CD and you can physically create what could have been their next great album after tLWS/BS.

I feel what keep these new songs from reaching "next level" status is their choruses. The first stanza of 'Gaucho' is promising as is the first stanza of 'If Only', but they don't reach the acoustic/bluesy/funky DMB heights.

Mercy is a great listen though.

Funny which way the climate of Ants goes these days. Thought Gaucho would get more love than it did, thought this song would get more hate then it has. Honestly, If Only has grown on me more because of ants, however Gaucho continues to grow on me despite ants...just thinking out loud.

To me, this song is the new album's Spaceman, only much, much better. For some reason the two songs seem very similar, but I much prefer If Only. It's more interesting and has a nice groove to it.

Dude, you can't beat Spaceman's guitar riff though, IMO

Maybe you should try and evolve with the band. Or maybe you're not capable of doing so....which is fine. I personally prefer to hear some new music and really don't need to hear Two Step or Ants for the 400th time. But I'm older and like chill music. But that's just me.

Agree with this definitely take some of the new tunes over some of the tired standards. Not comparing the music, just comparing the show experience for me (who will be seeing his 34, 35, and 36th show this season.)

    Spot on.

Mercy > Gaucho > Sweet > If Only > Ring around the Rosy

I mean really Dave? Cant think of something more creative than that?
I suppose it goes with the kids on album Gaucho though.

If Only reminds me of Space Between, same kind of syrupy poppiness. Then again, Tim's bluesy riffs are awesome, and the verse is better melodically than comparable BW stuff like Spaceman and You and Me. I kept waiting for Carter to do something more like Dive in, but alas...

This would do wonders for the song, absolute wonders. I really think he may have just played it safe. And it's not just because it's laid back...I just never hear him play his hi hat like that, all safe...

Carter doesn't need to go crazy on every song. I think the simplicity of his playing on the verses is what makes the beat so damn catchy and infectious.

It's not about crazy or not crazy...he doesn't go "crazy" on Mercy, but it's stil Carter's style through and through.

None of Carter's own drumming style is happening on If Only, it sounds like it could be anyone.

Overall I like it, but is it just me or did Rashawn and Jeff get lazy on this? The whole time I was waiting for them to do one of their crazy horn lines or a solo and all they did was play the same melody. Just plain and bland. I feel like they kinda kill the cool grove by repeating it over and over

    Agree 100%
Same thing with Jeff's part in the Mercy outro. I wish he'd noodle around with it a little more.
It doesn't have to be a big epic solo, although that would be cool. But they can be more creative than what they're doing i think.

It seems like they're playing it pretty safe with this initial round of playing the new material. Remember how long it took for Spaceman, Squirm, and Funny to evolve into good live songs? Or at least improved live songs?

EDIT: Hell, its taken 7 years for Everybody Wake Up to get good LOL

I am struggling with Carter. it sounds like a cover because hes playing boring normal drums :P If carter spiced this song up with some nice accents and typical carter style and the horns hit on some offbeats a bit more solid it would really up the anti and make this song riff killer. It sounds fairly john mayer the whole song at the moment, kind of overly mellow zzzz blues rather than exciting blues.
