I've listened to The Riff about 15 times now. I have to say it's really growing on me quickly. It's got the possibility for epic jam-ness live, and the more I listen to it, the more I think it has a very BTCS feel (music-wise). Lyrics are decent, but the music is really, really, freaking good.

Absolutely cannot wait for this album!

Put me to sleep.Good song. Nothing groundbreaking. The incessant ammount of the term "baby" makes the song annoying.

    Good Song...Nothing new here..

    Re: The Riff

I love this song. The build of it is perfect. The flute is great gives it a more sinister tone oddly. There are a lot of great little things like those high string hits on certain down beats.

It's hard to appreciate lyrics right away sometimes and I think a lot of us are struggling with that. I thought the Gaucho lyrics were only so-so when I first heard it but now after hearing that song multiple times over a month they seem more natural and solid. I think the riff will be the same. I think this will be viewed as an all around monster a short time from now. My only complaint about the lyrics I've heard on this disc is that there seem to be a lot of re-used lines from other DMB songs. There are a couple times in the riff where I think to myself "that's from SoL, that's from Minarets, etc." Hard to complain about the since that's kind of what we're always asking for though.

guess it could be that. This verse:

Sitting in a box away from the world out there
a world piled high with boxes just like this
but please don't ever leave me alone in here
take me out, shake off the dust, shake off the fear.

    and this:

I only got a minute or two to spare
and I gotta whole fuckin' life to fit in there

Just make me think of a dying man, specifically a dying man that has regrets with his wife. He knows the relationship hasn't been what it should and now he's facing death. There's a little fear in the words and the "stay with me" could apply to someone begging his wife to be there for him 100% and forgive a detachment or growing apart that has happened.

Pretty strong also is the impression that the speaker is asking his love to stay with him in death, keep his memory and love him when he's gone despite their difficulties

    Re: The Riff

This was my favorite song at the show last night and first time I had heard it. Now maybe it was partially because it was new or a contrast to the majority of the other songs, since I could actually hear and therefore enjoy the instruments, but I know without comparison, I was entranced musically, and (ignoring the "babies") taken away by the lyrics I could decipher (probably slightly inaccurate in my memory, but "Sitting in front of the TV set / I've got dreams to kill and friends to forget" floated through my head the rest of the night).

So I'll need to see how it turns out on the album when I can listen without so many outside influences, but even though I can't remember how it sounded, I can remember the imagery/feelings I had during it and the after-effect, both of which are very important to me. It has that magic that brought me into DMB to begin with. Glad to hear many of you are also enjoying it.

The best of the new songs. One way to make the song even better IMHO...replace Tim's solo at the end with one by BT ! I like Tim but I think DMB would benefit more with less Tim and more Boyd. DMB's sound over the last 5-6 or so years has lost much of it's uniqueness and has began to sound too much like a rock band rather than the diverse unique eclectic band I fell in love with back in 1995.

I like the sound they have now, but I do agree that more Boyd would be awesome.

That's 'fucking', for anybody who's not quite sure. Again, if you're not sure what the 'f' word is, it's 'fucking'.

Lillywhite said that on the album it is damned.

I think Dave was just nervous the first time he played it and said the F-word because it was what came to mind. I don't think it is something that is going to stay as damned makes more sense given the overall attitude/emotion of the song.

I hate to be so cynical about this, but I reckon that Dave just threw a 'fucking' in because he knew that it would lead the song overall to get a better response. As soon as he said the word 'fucking', the crowd started cheering, and then people were posting on the board saying that it was a top ten song.

This is the first song that I've heard that made me feel that Jeff Coffin was involved in the writing of the music. The "riff," pardon the pun, just feels very "Flecktones" to me. Very Eastern - and that's a good thing.

It's really interesting, and dare I say intoxicating. It feels very fresh to my ear, and I've been following this band for a long time. I like it.
