I love how all of the people who hate this song (on this and on the thread in DMBc) can't muster up any actual reasons for hating it. I also love how they are in an extreme minority.

Eh, it's okay. Not great, but okay - maybe it will grow on me. My first impression is that I like the lyrics themselves (except for the unnecessary f-bomb), but I don't like the flow / rhythm of the lyrics (while others might be fine with the flow, it just doesn't do anything for me). I'm good with downers / depressing songs, for example, I really dig Gravedigger and Digging a Ditch (haha, just noticed all the digs in that sentence), but this one isn't doing it for me. Musically, there are some aspects that are decent, like the violin and flute/horn parts, but the guitar sounds awful (sounds like I'm listening to a classic rock station). The chorus is okay, but not great. Just my opinion.

As it is, I'd rate it a 4 out of 10. If you completely removed Tim from it, I'd maybe bump it up to a 6.

It's a good song with elements of greatness that will come out as time goes on (read: when we hear the studio version) but for now I'll go with "good tune"

I will say I think it's one of the most complex songs they've written- right up there with YNK, Rhyme, etc.

I am not a fan of "The Riff" and at this point I don't understand the love for it. It sounds like a bad 80's arena rock song.

All are entitled to a negative opinion of a song because I never have liked FTWII and others but The Riff is big time good. There is an element to it that seems like a 70's song but hell I love the early 70's music. This band has had a throwback element to it since their beginning. I'll be stunned if this song doesn't become a fan favorite for years. The one tiny thing that bothers me is the pause before the solo doesn't have a MFKN drum intro to the solo

if gaucho didn't repeat the line "ya gotta do much more than believe if you really wanna change things" over and over it would be a good song. musically it's great, but those lyrics are just awful.

the riff however, is a song that gives zero fucks. and I love it.

All in good time on the drum intro. This song will evolve over the next couple years. It has a lot of room to grow.

I completely agree. I wish that they had brainstormed something better for the chorus on gaucho because that song has the potential to be so much better than it is.

Yes, the music is awesome on Gaucho but what surprises me is how many people get so stuck on the lyrics. I personally don't mind the lyrics at all but I also don't need a song to have good lyrics to love it. Lyrics are not why I love music.

I agree completely with you, I'm not one usually to really critique lyrics like that. I still enjoy the song. It just gets a little annoying to me when they are repeated over and over and over again.

I'm willing to forgive a lot when it comes to lyrics if the music (and vocal melody) is good. Gaucho's end jam with Jeff gives me chills (with or without the kids) when I hear it. That's more than enough for me to say I love that song.

I could say the same for EWU, which has seen a resurgence this year. I always liked the song for the end jam; the lyrics never mattered to me at all (atrocious as they were/are)

This is what I wrote in the other thread, but I also find this song such a mess that I find it difficult to know where to start with it -

    Quote:
I don't have any problem with the lyrics, aside from that stupid 'fucking' line, but the guitar riff just sounds a bad guitarist practicing their major scale to me. The second part of the guitar riff literally just goes stepwise through the major scale, up a fifth, and back down again, in the same monotonous rhythm. That's pretty much as unmusical as you can get. Then you've got the parts of the song where everybody in the band is playing the exact same rhythm, which is just pointless. Nobody in the band plays anything interesting at all. The different parts just don't make sense together - as soon as it starts sounding like it might be going somewhere, it just meanders off into some completely unrelated idea. It contains loads of cliched rock riffs that have just been done millions of times before. I don't know, I just can't find anything in this song that remotely resembles musical content, and I've got people all over the place telling me that I'm an idiot for not liking it. I have no problem with people enjoying this song if they want to, but I don't understand for the life of my why its defenders are so aggressive about it.

I agree I've been listening to the new LT and Tim overpowers everything - I miss hearing Dave's guitar - as much as I am a fan of Tim, I prefer if he is an occassional guest and only on some songs not overpowering the guitar and violin like we have had the past couple of years

Not one of my top picks after the first rounds. Finally gave it some well deserved attention, and it impressed. YNK-level. Tim does change the song to something completely unlike in sound than You Never Know, what of it? The Riff is still a great song musically from beginning to end, just like YNK.

    It's Great
